Denver has a huge Mexican population and you'll have better luck finding traditional Mexican or New Mexican than Tex-Mex. La Loma is pretty good. Their red chili sauce is good.

EOT.

BTW - Matt Stone and Trey Parker bought it.

I don't know if you would call it Tex Mex, but Sam's #3 is a great choice.

I think it is being remodeled after trey and matt bought it

I hope they don't do to much to it. The food was bad....think Pancho's on an off night. But it was a lot of fun between the cliff divers and gorilla hunt

Why go all the way to Denver and seek out Tex-mex?

This. It wouldn't even occur to me to get that there.

To follow up - maybe OP lived there and is seeking out options he may not have thought of.
However - as someone who has lived away from Texas for 5yrs. Now - I've just accepted that you're not going to get good or even adequate Tex-mex outside of Texas.

D'Corozon in downtown is probably the best bet. Or any hole in the wall down Federal.

Friend of mine (Dallas Native) is stuck up there for 2 months of training for work and looking for decent Tex-Mex.

Don't remeber the name, for good reasons, but a place just down from Coors Field, that had a logo with a margarita glass and 2 with a strike through it. I ignored it and I payed the price as I went out like a light after 4 of em.

Denver has some great Mexican food places - from taco trucks to high end. However, Tex Mex isn't really something you'll find a lot of here. I think 100% de Agave is on the Tex Mex end of the scale, but not by much. A couple of places did open up the last few years with TX transplants, but that style just doesn't resonate here and the ones I remember hearing about have all closed. Cantina Loco is run by the same chef who'll be taking over the kitchen at Casa Bonita, but it's Mexican and not Tex Mex. La Fogata might be close. Our two favorites right now are a New Mexican place up in Boulder well worth the drive and a restaurant in Denver serving Baja Mexican.

Lived there 6 years. It all stinks. Just accept it. Tacos de Mexico is just good enough when desperate.

When we lived there we were actually excited when we learned there was an On the Border. It was a decent drive from our home in Commerce City but we didn't care. Crappy enchiladas from OTB were better than crappy attempts by the local colorado-mex joints.

In quite a mash up, an old friend of mine worked there in high school…he wore the gorilla costume, that is until he was fired on the spot for taking on the high dive in the gorilla costume.

That's Rio Grande, the restaurant discussed above your post.

It's good and they also have restaurants in Boulder and Fort Collins.
