Tilapia in black bean soup?

Might sound dumb/odd, but I was in the process of making some beans with plans of making a simple black bean soup, but was wondering about ways to bump up the protein. Have a couple frozen tilapia filets and was wondering if I cooked those and stuck it in the blender with the beans if it would make things taste or smell off? I know I've made tacos with tilapia before, with minimal fish smell/taste, and tilapia is a generally neutral fish. But who knows what'll happen if sitting in the fridge for a few days.

Once I made the mistake of adding a more aromatic fish (I can't remember it was tuna or sardines) to red beans and rice. Big mistake.

Don't know, but that sounds disgusting.

Yes not trying to pile on, but that does not sound good at all.

If you were really dead set on adding fish to it, roast or pan fry the fish up and lay it on top of the soup. Don't cook them together.

Blending fish is always a great idea

Yeah, that sounds like a better idea.

I'll hold off. And the more I think about it the more I wonder what I was thinking. Have done it before with chicken, but that's chicken.

Is there such a thing a good tilapia out there? I see whole tilapia at the fish counter, but my experience with the frozen filets is so underwhelming I've never been motivated to try.

The only thing to do with that tilapia is throw it out. Terrible fish

Black bean soup sounds like the worst thing ever, just by itself.

Yeah, tilapia is a pretty bland, tasteless fish. But cheap, quick and easy to cook, and decent amount of protein.

I hear you. Count me in the camp of seeking other alternatives personally, even if just vegetarian.

It's literally a trash fish - like fed trash in the farms.
It's just not good and there are other equally as affordable options

Tilapia is a staple because you can feed it anything and it's somewhat edible. You use it in things that you want cheap protein and can overpower the flavor. Breaded fried. Fish tacos. Jerk seasoned.

It'll become more popular as we overfish more species. They can be fed plants only which is huge for sustainable aquaculture as most fish need other fish or some sort of living food. Learn to like it now and you'll be ahead of the curve when salmon and trout are prohibitively expensive.

I like to think of tilapia as a cheap, blank canvas. It doesn't taste like much, but add a little blackening seasoning and put it in a sandwich and it's edible.

I remember watching an episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe visited a fish farm. They had trout and tilapia in the same tanks. They only had to feed the trout. The trout then fed the tilapia.

Exactly the moment I quit eating tilapia

Yep, I used to like eating tilapia, then found out it mainly eats poop. Trash fish.
