Question for Keurig users

If you use your own ground coffee in reusable coffee pods, how does it compare to a cup of coffee that has been brewed in a regular drip coffee maker?

I'm considering buying one for someone, but I've never personally been very keen on what I get from pre-pack coffee pods. I'd like to know they're still getting something that tastes as good or reasonably close to regular drip coffee. He's currently using instant coffee, so I can't imagine it being worse than that.

We have a grinder next to the Keurig. My wife grinds her beans, then loads them in a re-usable k-cup with a paper filter. She says it's better than a standard drip coffee machine.

All I really have to offer here is if you buy one, do not buy the fanciest models. Simple is better.

I bought one 5 yrs ago and it died. I bought a K Supreme Smart on New Years Day 2022. It died 3 months into the year. I sent it back to them, they accidentally sent me 2 back. Good thing. I used the 2nd one for 6 months and one day when I was descaling it, the screen went black and would not turn on. I'm on the 3rd waiting for the shoe to drop.

We have a simple one at work and that thing is a workhorse. It gets used 10x as much and works every single time.

While I have a Nespresso and agree, the coffee is a little different. My dad doesn't like it because it's foamier than his K cups or drip coffee.

The other negatives are they're more expensive and a little more difficult to buy. The virtuo machines/coffee pods are over $1 a pod. You can buy K cups for like $.60 a pod. You can also buy those K cups everywhere, like HEB, Target, WalMart. You have to buy Nespresso pods online or at really select and not convenient Nespresso locations, like the Galleria. Not a big deal for a lot of people to just order online, but a big deal for others.

If this person is drinking instant coffee right now, not sure Nespresso would be the right route....

To address the first question, cheap coffee in the reusable pod thing is much worse than old school dripper. There isn't enough contact time between the grounds and the water. Cheap coffee in a regular pod is about the same as a dripper. Good coffee in a reusable pod is not as good as a dripper, but close enough. Good coffee in a regular pod still isn't as good as a dripper, but close.
If they are currently drinking instant, anything will be a big upgrade.

Some of the keurig machines have a optical thing that makes them only work with keurig brand pods. Make sure you don't get one of those. Personally, I think it makes a **** cup of coffee, but the ease of use and single serve nature keeps me using it.

Definitely a no-go on that. The expense is too significant for him and I know he won't like it. Being able to use regular coffee grounds is a must. fwiw, he uses instant coffee because doing the math to make anything less than a full pot of coffee in a regular coffee maker is too difficult a task for him to sort out. "Fill the pod and press the button" is a set of instructions he can handle.

I'm thinking about the Keurig Express. It seems to fit that bill.

this is me. I was a loyal Nespresso drinker for several years, but recently switched back to regular drip style coffee. The expense of vertuo pods, and lack of variety got old to me. I can buy a crappy coffee pot and bag of coffee at walmart that will last a month, compared to the same price for nespresso pods that will last two weeks.

I'm not sure what the end goal is here but the allure of a Keurig is one cup capability so I'm guessing the end user isn't much of a coffee drinker. One, maybe two cups?

My solution to this was a small, "4-Cup" percolator. Farberware makes a great one. Traditional "cup" counts are 6oz cups, which, by today's standards, are tiny. A Starbucks Tall is 12oz for comparison, so that's "2 cups" as marked on your coffee maker's carafe.

The 4-Cup percolator makes 2-3 normal coffee mugs of coffee, can be left plugged in to keep it hot until you're done and is essentially as quick as total time consumed prepping, making, cleaning then repeating the process to make the same number of cups in a loose grounds kcup maker.

Just a thought!

Not the cheapest solution but percolated coffee is VERY VERY good.

I got this one after my two Keurigs farted out on me.

I love this because it doesnt take forever to warm up and none of this "You have to use K-cup with certain writing on the rim" to use.

Much better alternative

Since I'm the only coffee drinker in my house,I have a kuerig on my counter that has made 5-6 cups of coffee a week for 12 years. It is still going strong. I have found the only k-cups that are any good are the Community Coffee ones.

I also have a nespresso and a French press that get some use
