I always remember that stretch being pretty desolate back in the day. Can't imagine it changed much.

If you are not in a hurry you can change your route to go down 35 and hit Miller's in Belton. You can make up the time by going the back way from Temple to Hearne, which is basically the autobahn.

Google Maps says Whup's BBQ in Marlin is permanently closed, if so that is too bad. They made the TM top 50 a few years back and I never had a bad experience there.

ETA qualifier: they LOOK like they're putting out some quality. I've not been there myself.

Once you're in Waco the universally accepted two best spots are Helburg & Guess family. Both use prime level meats so they're pretty pricy, but so good. I prefer Helburg and strongly recommend their pork steak. Jaspers is old, classic bbq which has its place for sure.
