For any TexAgers in the Houston Area, have you ever been to the Gordon Food Service Store? I never knew it existed until recently. It appears to be a Sam's/Costco type store catered towards restaurants, but is also open to the public.

They have some unique items you don't typically find in other stores, such as the coveted Land O Lakes Extra Melt cheese many on here use for queso.

Looking through their website they have several other unique foods at decent prices.

Looks similar to Restaurant Depot, except you need a tax ID number to buy anything there.

Not to derail but I use Restaurant Depot all the time and if you buy $500 they will delivery it to your house at no additional cost.

I was excited when one opened near my house, but the excitement faded pretty quickly. The produce is usually lacking, and one time, the tomatoes were all rotting and nasty. I pop in occasionally if I need something to complete a meal since it is so close, but they usually don't have what I need. Seems like they try to give options for non-restaurant customers, but those are lacking.

It's not bad. Don't expect it to be like Costco/Sams. It wouldn't hurt to stop by and see what they have for future reference. I wouldn't really go to get groceries but if I wanted a gallon of hot sauce or gallon of liquid butter alternative I would check it out. The Oreo popcorn was great.

I read that Sysco has opened a store offering a warehouse-style shopping experience similar to Sam's Club, but with a focus on restaurant and foodservice supplies. Somewhere on Katy Fwy

I helped open Gordon Food Service stores in Houston as a store manager. They made some mistakes in coming here, in my opinion. They thought it would be easy like it is for them in the Midwest, but Houston doesn't work that way. Things have now been scaled back considerably. The issue is/was they cannot decide if they are a retailer or wholesaler. They want to be wholesale but then make/stock dozens of high dollar fresh squeezed in store juices…more than a Whole Foods would carry. None of it sold. They carry whole muscle cryovac meats…but nothing in retail packaging for the average consumer. It's a good company, and they absolutely wanted to bring the world to Htown, but had to scale back before they lost their shirts.
