IIRC there was talk of having a Reddit like feature where users could up or down vote posts in order to bring the more meaningful posts to the top. Did this feature get shelved?

I'm not sure that idea ever surfaced from the staff. I'm sure it did from the community, but we were never really on board with allowing downvotes. We felt like giving users a way of down-voting things would cause more problems than providing benefits. Instead, we wanted to give users a way of positively reinforcing posts as a sole method of "voting," (in the form of Blue Stars) and I think it's been pretty effective in terms of elevating content through the POTD.
