One of my earliest memories of A&M basketball is listening on the radio to A&M losing to #1 UCLA 117-53 at Pauley Pavilion in December 1971. That UCLA team went 30-0 that year, was #1 all year, had five future NBA/ABA players, was coached by John Wooden, and was led by sophomore and player-of-the-year Bill Walton. It remains the worst loss in program history.

Now we are finally good enough to beat the #1 team…and with room to spare. A&M, you've come a long way, baby! Congratulations!

That's a neat memory (other than the outcome). I wonder how a small school from College Station got to be on the schedule vs one of the greatest dynasties of all time.

Yes, this was during UCLA's 88-game winning streak from 1970-74. I'm sure Shelby Metcalf agreed to play UCLA. To be fair to Shelby, he could not have realized how bad the beatdown would be. Four of UCLA's five starters did not play for them the year before. Three of them were sophomores (including Walton) and had to play on UCLA's freshmen team the year before. I believe the other had been injured during his sophomore year. We were UCLA's fourth game that year.

Class of 1986, but I grew up up in B-CS and saw my first Aggie basketball game during the 1969-70 season, when Mike Heitmann and Steve Niles were our stars.

If you looked at the crowd and thought that the student population was the problem then you are insane.

I watched West Texas State from Canyon lose to Kentucky in Rupp Arena 121-67 in 1978 during my postgrad. days. I wondered at the time who arranged that meeting. I also saw A&M beat Ky in the UKIT a few weeks later
