I know you're joking here but I'm practically all but certain he is.

For Texas, right?

Ha, no. I don't quite have a leader for where yet. Not any of the places that national media have really mentioned yet. I could see Arizona State if they fire Hurley.

I've always assumed it would be Oklahoma. I feel like Arizona State is just nutty, but I guess he kinda is like a guy in the back of the van yelling "Wild card!"

We need to run him off so we can hire Bill Self before Texas does.

I think there's two big factors. One, I don't think a lot of fan bases are going to put up with his "brick by brick" team building strategy or even really just his overall style of play. So you're looking for places that don't mind a rebuild. (Which probably eliminates Texas and Indiana.)

The other is I think a school that wants to hire him is a school looking to "do more with less" from an NIL standpoint. He's going to draw a big salary, but he's proven here that from a full athletics department commitment standpoint he's a pretty solid value play. Oklahoma feels like they might want to try doing more with more.

I'm convinced he's leaving, too. It's Buzz. He's a unique guy. Massive rebuild coming; and that's OK. I'm here for it. I'm gonna buy two more seats (in addition to the current two I already have) next year regardless if he goes or stays.

So, what is his motivation to move on? buzz is getting market rate coaching $$$ . Texas $ is better than elsewhere with tax. He know all this I am sure...

We are low stress school

Can't imagine greener pasture elsewhere.

Well if he's looking to rebuild and start over new, all he has to do is stay put.

I wouldn't begin to try and guess what really motivates Buzz. He's a weird cat.

I think he completely retires from coaching before he leaves the Aggies for another gig.

But I really prefer he stays here. My favorite Aggie coach EVER!

If he does leave, we should really circle up and hire a former student who would never leave us...go after Brian Barone!

Buzz will be doing a massive rebuild wherever he coaches next year. He could do that at A&M, or he could do that at a place like Arizona State or Florida State (not sure he wants any more of the ACC, though) or Utah. Buzz is 52 years old, so he can coach 15-18 more years if he chooses to do so. Salary money won't be a factor, so he just has to ask himself a few questions like "where do I want to live" or "what do my wife and family want" or "what kind of AD do I want to work for" or "where will my style and personality be a good fit" or "will I have ample NIL funding"?

The answer to all of those questions could be Texas A&M. But Buzz being the interesting, somewhat eccentric person that he is, I can see him wanting to rebuild one more program before he retires.

However, the reasons I think he would shun Arizona State are:
  • Steady diet of Arizona, Kansas, Iowa State, Texas Tech, BYU, Baylor, and Houston on the schedule - that is almost as brutal as the SEC is this year.
  • Coast to coast travel on the regular - those trips from Tempe to Cincinnati, Orlando, and Morgantown cannot possibly be fun.
  • Nobody...and I mean NOBODY...willingly makes trips to places like Stillwater, Manhattan, Lubbock, Ames, Waco, or Manhattan (the small one).
  • And Jiminy Christmas...the hot weather in the Grand Canyon State is absolutely brutal.

EDIT: Jensen to Utah is official, so you can scratch them from my post above.

I hope Buzz stays, but I wouldn't blame him for leaving.

He seems very under appreciated for what he's brought to Aggieland.

Family is the main thing I could see keeping him here another few years. His youngest is still in High School, and the second youngest just started playing div 3 basketball in Texas.

Agree about the lack of appreciation.

These last 5 seasons have arguably been the most entertaining in the history of Texas Aggie Men's Basketball.

Really hope he stays!!!

The appreciation thing kind of cuts both ways though. If you really want buy-in from a fanbase that doesn't traditionally support basketball at a high level, you sometimes have to go out of your way to go get it.

This would be one of my top things I'd look for in our next coach. That doesn't mean they have to be a Bruce Pearl standing shirtless in the student section for a football game, but we need someone who's going to try and motivate the fan base to give to NIL and those sorts of things.

It's a complete guess for sure. He's only stayed any where for 6 years at max and he is losing almost his entire team. He could opt to stay and rebuild his own team if he's looking for a challenge. He might want to see what it's like to stay at this point in his life.

I have no idea other than I won't be surprised.

Sure feels like he is gone, which totally sucks. People quickly forgot how bad the Kennedy years sucked ass. Buzz returned us to BCG/Turg level competition and has maybe the 2nd/3rd best team in A&M history this year.

Regardless, money will have to step up to field a team worth watching next year.

Very unlikely that we a better coach, and def won't without NIL guarantees.

There is NO reason to believe "he's gone". Sheesh!!!

Let's just enjoy this coach, this team, and this season - which, in case anyone forgets, is ONGOING!

Question regarding rebuild: how hard is it to rebuild in the age of the portal? If 8 guys are gone after this season, I'd imagine someone's looking for 4-5 one or two-year guys to bring in experience to fill some of the gap.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I'm surprised people are convinced he's leaving. Maybe he is...after the Schloss debacle nothing would surprise me.

In his introductory press conference I got the impression that getting back to Texas (and specifically A&M) was a big deal for him. Personally I think he's more likely to retire than leave for another school.

Speaking of video, I have not seen a rebroadcast of the game on any of the stations, could have missed it of course. Considering it was the #1 team I thought there would be several showings... but they were playing the Aggies.

He's stated multiple times this would be his last stop, but that holds zero weight as we all know. He stated on his radio show that when he has his first grandchild is when he will retire.

Retiring at 52, I don't think he'll go that route yet but, he won't coach a day past 62 in my opinion.
