Our last 4 coaches have been good. Better hiring record than the other 2 of the big 3. Crazy we had bcg bring us from the dead. Whiney turd did well but couldn't get over being number 2. Bk was disappointing... and still did more than any other coach w 2 sweet 16s. Then buzz with what he has done. How can you not sell that to the next guy if buzz leaves

We sell it the same way we always do. Throw a bunch of money at an average coach and watch us get bounced in the 2nd round.

Until we get a big name with a staff that knows how to recruit blue chip players with NIL money, we'll be the basketball equivalent of our football team. Good, but never great.

Basketball is a much higher revenue sport than baseball. A Final 4 appearance makes your school infinitely more than the baseball NC. No idea why we don't pump more money into bball.

Because we aren't a basketball school.
And any coach that wants to be at a top tier program already knows that.

We will always fight uphill against our historical lack of pedigree, from seeding to recruiting. We struggle to truly turn out for our team. We won't attract the highest ranked recruits. Unless we decide to money whip some guys chasing NIL, we are a blue collar basketball school.

It is what it is. Hopefully we can catch lighting in a bottle with a few players pinching above their weight and have some great runs.

The "big name" stuff is laughable. Does Texas tech get big names? Buzz was a great hire on paper.

I dont know what kind of school we are right now in terms of the leadership. A bean counting school is my guess. Are we really just going to stay the course with women's basketball for instance?

Texas tech is on their way to the 3rd straight coach making the sweet 16 in the last 7 years. Are they not in the same boat?

This will change in the next 10-15 years.
Texas is leading the country in population growth, and the result is that Texas is producing a lot more elite basketball players.

Texas will end up being like North Carolina where any combination of A&M, Texas, Houston, Tech and Baylor will have teams that will be legit contenders for the Final Four and the National Title.

NC State, Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina seem to always be in the mix for the Final Four.

Debateable

Cotton bowl blowout win against OU with a heisman winner
Orange bowl victory

But overall, underperforming and embarrassing

Thinking this school deserves a top notch coach is comical.

Aggies are clueless about basketball. People don't go to the games. People barely talk about the games. We don't deserve *****

All of those schools were much more ready and willing to support a basketball program.

Too bad our fball fanbase is not ready to support a coach if that's all it takes. I'm not even really a buzz fan. All I'm saying is our basketball success is better than anything else in our recent history. Pretty much 4 for 4 in getting guys that do something in the post season.

Except basketball was never quite like football where talent stayed in state a lot of the time. It wasnt like Duke or UNC was stacked with local NC kids. California produces more NBA level talent than most any other state. Other than UCLA, and maybe USC and Fresno St, they were never a basketball power house. Kentucky, Louisville, and Kansas arent steaming with local in state talent, their programs recruited a ton of kids from out of state.

It's not like NC isn't experiencing its own population boom.

For a long time the only school from Texas to really ever do anything in March Madness was the Houston Cougars.

Texas Tech, Baylor and Houston have all made the Final Four in the past 5 or 6 years. In the upcoming years I think you are going to see a lot more success in March from schools based in Texas.

Your point above is valid...a huge population does not guarantee success in football or basketball.

What's interesting is to think about budget (not including NIL). The numbers I've seen put us in the high teens. On average, that's what we're getting now. Make the tournament and win the first game are the bare minimum. Then in the mix for sweet 16. Tu spends even more but look how they turned out. Then Tech and UH spend less.

Not being a "basketball school" seems to matter less and less. It's all going to be about money, NIL, and coaching. Nearly every SEC has money to be in the mix but it's going to take some improvements in talent and a little luck for a legit shot at e8 or better.

Baylor was the first program to embrace being a basketball school in a football crazy state, then tech followed. A&M and texas, are playing catch up because now NIL has made them attractive in basketball. I'd say we are already there as a state with the runs those other programs have had the past decade. That's three separate programs in a Final Four.

I think what we will see is the shift from where major.programs came from due to NIL. The former Big East schools are now being replaced by the Big 12/SEC.

What's interesting is if Houston wins it this year. UH could've been a blue blood at this point had they not fumbled around for almost 30 years after G.Lewis. Sampson has them on the verge, but he's not that young.

It's really stupid of our fanbase and administration not to emBrace basketball

If we did we could become a power almost over night

It's not like football where you need 85 players and everyone and their mother are trying to win at the highest level because of how much money and publicity there is in football

We have been to the NCAA tournament five times, the Sweet 16 twice, SEC Championship game twice, won the SEC regular season once, and have won at least one game in the tournament at four times since the Cotton Bowl season.

I'm not sure how much the COVID-year Orange Bowl matters. Our schedule was trash and the only teams we beat that finished ranked were 8-4 Florida and UNC that had a ton of bowl game hold outs.

We all know the answer to that. We laughed at Baylor until they won it. Our fans raise their nose to the idea of embracing basketball, but pour energy into something as boring as baseball. Our biggest traditions are centered around football, and I doubt that will change in our lifetimes.

I'm not delusional when I say this, but I think we're closer to a final four appearance sooner than we will ever win a title in football.

With the money, basketball is the easiest sport to immediately become a basketball school. The "we aren't a basketball school" Schlick is tiresome. We've made the dance 3 seasons in a row, schools that aren't basketball schools don't do that.
