Who would be considered a "Jackie Sherrill type hire" among the active college basketball coaches?

Whoever that might be, why are we not doing it?

Because A&M, a school with no basketball history, would be idiotic for firing a HC that has made 3 straight NCAA Tournament appearances and 4-straight post-season appearances. The delusion of some people is just amazing.

You can split hairs over the phrase but you know what I mean. We're talking about a program who's best showing in an NCAA Tournament is the Sweet 16 so yeah, I'll stand behind my comment. But to the OP's question, who do you think is a Jackie Sherrill-type basketball coach that A&M can bring in after Buzz is canned? (Just typing that makes me laugh because the entire premise is ridiculous).

When was the last time that A&M made the Elite 8 in college basketball?

I'm critical of this season but fully support Buzz.

He's giving us one of the best basketball eras in school history. He's had to deal with COVID destroying his first season and his best big man (Marble) getting into trouble before last season. Yet he's made progress every year and continues correcting issues. Buzz is our guy.

while i personally like buzz and hope he is our coach moving forward. i do think this is an interesting question though. a coach who is or has been at the pinnacle but is still young like jackie was back in the early 80's.

the few guys i came up with are nate oats at bama. he is maybe 50 and has bama consistently in the top of the conference and country since he has been at bama ,which is a football school.

another would be drew at baylor. he has won it all has made baylor a really good program year in and year out. but i wonder if he might be on the tail end of his really good run.

maybe beard at ole miss. he has proven he can win and win big. he is young and appears very motivated.

I'd say Todd Golden at Florida is the best young up and comer in the coaching ranks. He learned under Bruce Pearl while he was an assistant at Auburn. Jon Scheyer at Duke is also a top young coach who learned under Coack K. Of course we aren't in their league as a basketball school. I lkke Scott Cross who is at at Troy who took UTA and Troy to the NCAA tourney. He obviously would be a gamble for a major program but he might show he's capable of being a great coach given the resources.

You know he got fired at UTA. So we would be hiring a guy UTA fired a few years ago

I dont think anyone here thinks that Buzz is going to get fired or should be fired.

The discussion is about if he leaves for "greener pastures" and most seem ambivalent about it.

Who would we go get? I have no clue. I'd like to have Buzz Williams back. He's a good coach and is good for Texas A&M University.

Never.

If Buzz were to move on which I don't expect at all my first call would be to McCollum at Drake. I suspect he will not be at Drake next season.

Jackie Sherrill went 11-1 each of his last three seasons at Pitt (79-81), won the Walter Camp coach of the year award, and Pitt finished No. 2 in the coaches' poll his last two seasons with Dan Marino as his QB.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Sherrill

A&M poached him by making him the first million dollar and highest paid football coach.

https://vault.si.com/vault/1982/02/01/jackie-hits-the-jackpot
Quote:

JACKIE HITS THE JACKPOT
TEXAS A&M LURED JACKIE SHERRILL FROM PITTSBURGH FOR THE MOST BUCKS EVER OFFERED A FOOTBALL COACH
. . .Six days earlier, the 38-year-old Sherrill had stunned the college football world by signing a six-year contract with the Aggies forhold on, folks $267,000 a year, a total of $1,602,000. That makes him far and away the highest-paid college coach in the land.
. . .
In Fayetteville, Ark., Razorback Coach Lou Holtz said, "This is overemphasis on football at its height, but so what? I just hope that our fans, as broadminded as they are, don't expect a poor old $40,000-a-year coach like me to be able to beat a $2 million coach like Sherrill." Typically, Holtz grossly understated his income, but in fact he's not in Sherrill's new financial class.
. . .
Ironically, Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler was a principal player in the saga. He was offered about $2.25 million over 10 years to come to College Station. He was on the brink, then backed off,
. . .
The facilities at A&M may be the best in the nation. R.C. Slocum, whom Sherrill hired away from USC last week to be his defensive coordinator, and who has Aggie ties (he was assistant coach at A&M from 1972 to 1980), says, "These fans will do anything to help you. Anything. I just think they feel they haven't been properly rewarded."
. . .
But the Aggie spirit isn't only indomitable, it's infectious. Last season the student body of 35,500 bought 27,000 season football tickets.
. . .

The next Jackie Sherrill is almost any coach you want (excepting for certain blue bloods) as long as the school is willing to pay for "far and away the highest paid college [basketball] coach in the land."

And has been very good at New Mexico. I think he wasn't ready for P5 ball at Minnesota and also that seems to be a tough place to compete . I'll admit I'm just throwing ideas out there tho because I don't believe we'll be in the market and I personally hope we aren't.

No history?

Correct. No history. Aggie basketball has sucked for a century. No coach is dying to coach here, for reasons like these. Our idiotic fans, who know nothing about basketball, always want coaches fired. We have a 2 time SEC coach of the year and we have "fans" who think we can do better than that. Our facilities aren't good, our attendance isn't good, we're a football and baseball first school and we have whiny fans. Buzz actually WANTS to be here. The only other coaches that would consider this place, would come for money and money alone.

Appreciate what we've got. If we ran Buzz off, we'd be a laughingstock for doing so and there would be nobody worth a damn in line to take his spot.

We aren't running Buzz off. As you suggest it would be nuts to do so. I think the bigger concern is Buzz leaving of his own accord but I also don't really believe that's in the cards either. Having said that … you never really know.

Buzz is a top 10 paid coach with 2 tourney wins in 6 years. His predecessor, like him or hate him, has greatly outperformed him at this point.

Yep, because the statistics back up the comment. A&M's been playing basketball since 1912. In 113 years, A&M has made 17 NCAA Tournaments and a whopping 6 Sweet 16 appearances. It is what it is and nothing to get upset about. I think Buzz is a good coach and a great representative of the University. But fantasizing about what coach, on a relative level to Jackie Sherrill when he left Pitt, who would come to A&M is delusional. As pointed out in a previous post, A&M made Jackie Sherrill the highest paid college football coach at the time. You think that's happening in basketball? LOL

Buzz is currently the 17th highest paid coach in men's college basketball. Right between Kelvin Sampson and Chris Jans.Top 10, in order: Bill Self, John Calipari, Dan Hurley, Tom Izzo, Mick Cronin, Bruce Pearl, Rick Barnes, Scott Drew, Tommy Lloyd and Nate Oates. You think A&M can money-whip one of those guys into coming in if Buzz leaves?

Did you mean to direct that comment at the OP? Because he is the one who has no idea. He even said so: "Whoever that might be..." The OP's premise is that a college basketball coach today who is the relative equivalent to Jackie Sherrill in 1981 should be the next A&M hire.

I don't believe Trev will fire Buzz, and see no reason - Our AD is the opposite of a gunslinger

But I would not be surprised if Buzz stepped down and looked to build another program. Just from the tone in recent interviews.

Buzz has averaged 24 wins/season since COVID. BK had 4 bad seasons. Then Rick Stansbury helped Kennedy find that talent for 2 Sweet 16s.

However, Buzz needs his own Rick Stansbury (or maybe Rick himself) to recruit the NIL players A&M needs to stay competitive. SEC has gone from the 5 best conference to a clear #1 CBB conference.

Ok - I was wrong, hes the 17th highest paid coach. How highly paid do you need to be to reach a sweet 16 every 6 years?
