Buzz is a winner

Is Buzz a winner? Yes. Virginia Tech is worse off after losing him. We could be too.

I think he should have been to the tourney 4 straight years. Got screwed by the Notre Dame decision, but they weren't a lock that year.

Getting to the tourney every other year is the bar for me and he was hitting that bar. A sweet 16 every 3 to 4 years and you're crushing it at A&M. Julius Marble missing def hurt another chance at getting to the 2nd weekend.

He's definitely had some bad luck that he can't control.

I think the frustration is his approach with a lack of shooting/scoring.

My thoughts as of right now: he's a winner, but won't be the best coach we ever have. However, far from the worst coach we will ever have. It seems like a coinflip whether we will be worse off or better off without him since I don't know who our options would be.

If your definition of a winner, is one S16 in the last 12 yrs, you are right.

He definitely is a high floor / low ceiling type of coach.

With the kids he recruits and the style he plays, we will never be at the bottom of the league (short of injuries or extreme unluckiness), but we will never win big with him.

And yes, most of the frustration is lack of shooting and unexplainable losing streaks during the middle of almost every season that tanks our seed and that he can't seem to get past game 2 in the tourney.

Losing Marble sunk last season.

The emergence of Payne saved this season.

Our coaches can't seem to get out of the way of their own ego & biases: Jimbo with his Ihop/ Waffle House menu & Buzz with his focus on defense, rebounding, & motivational speaking. Don't get me started on Early & the baseball team; it's beyond salvation at this point barring the miracle of all miracles.

But with respect to Buzz, IF he stays, he needs to find an "ace recruiter" & an assistant coach to implement innovative offensive schemes. If ANY coach remaining could also teach the fundamentals of shooting a free throw, Buzz could really, really turn this program around; as it stands now, there doesn't appear to be any optimism about him achieving a successful rebuild that we all know is a certainty for next year, which coupled with a general indifference about reports linking him to job openings, leaves us with a milk toast attitude towards it all.

Also, if AD Alberts doesn't have a "Oh ****" plan ready to go at a moment's notice, then that dude should be cut loose quicker than any action that might befall Early, or women's basketball, or soccer, or whatever other sport aggravates your "BAS"!

We don't need "innovative offensive schemes" we need to be better at basic offensive fundamentals.

If a football team couldn't pass block, couldn't throw the ball accurately, couldn't catch, and fumbled all the time you wouldn't say they need a different scheme. Unless they get better at those things, no scheme is going to work.

This team was terrible at passing the ball, even worse at shooting the ball, had like 2.5 players who could dribble the ball, had a hard time getting guys open off of screens, etc. etc.

The scheme might be a problem, but how would you know if you're bad at all of these things first.

Dribbling drove me crazy the last few years. I know Flagg is perhaps a generational talent but watching him break dudes down off the dribble was so disheartening.

Yep, we have not had many multi skill players under Buzz. Seems like a lot of role players
that could do 1 or 2 things well, but usually not including scoring.

I mean, if you look at Buzz Williams tournament losses, which one was really bad? Penn State was an awful matchup and really hot team. Houston a one seed and a badly under seeded Michigan. Texas A&M might get to see what it's like to go back to not making the tourney.

All of these crazy hot underseeded teams went out and lost the next day.

At some point you have to admit we're the common denominator.

Can't keep paying a top 20 Coach's salary and get 240-300 offensive stats.

For me it's simple. I like Buzz. I like rooting for the teams he puts together. I think he's a good guy. I think he's capable of taking us into the second weekend.

I wish we went further this year and think the team was capable of it. But the NCAA Tournament is a crap shoot. Unless you're a top 4 team (and sometimes even if you are) it all depends on matchups and who gets hot on a given nights. I'm happy with three straight tournament runs. He's giving us a chance to do something special if the right things fall into place. If he's here long enough, I think it'll happen at some point. And I'd much rather root for him and his teams than someone like Chris Beard.

Some may disagree, and that's fine. It's not like we're gonna fire him. So it's out of our hands. I hope he stays.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. Are you trying to get someone to convince you of one side or the other? Wasted bandwidth...

My theory is that they emphasize defense to the detriment of the offense. The offensive plan is to drive and try and get fouled or shoot and miss until we get a rebound that is an easy put back.

By advocating for a coach who has shown consistent improvement each year to stay, you're going to be shouted down for settling for mediocrity. If the constant whiners on this forum get their way and we end up with a new coach, then the next two seasons will be rough, followed by a few seasons of decent performance. The whiners will reemerge and demand a new coach and claim that anyone who disagrees is accepting mediocrity. Rinse, repeat. The Aggie way.

Did you miss the part where Buzz is apparently out trying to get most every job that comes open when he has 3 years left on his lucrative contract here which would be to the detriment of the stability of the Aggie program as well as the trust of the administration and donors and season ticket holders?

Buzz is a BIG winner.....at the bank!

How many of you yahoos have made the bread that he has made the past 10-12 years?

Definitely not me.

He gets paid handsomely to coach A&M to mediocre post-season heights, even tho his last 3 regular season win totals are likely the most successful that A&M has ever recorded.

Is this all just a conspiracy? Why has Buzz not responded to any media that has asked him to comment?

This isn't some big existential situation . Its just typical coaching deal. Reaction to this is only a reflection of whatever opinion of Buzz Williams you already have, just like if he was a beloved coach people would give the benefit of the doubt, express hope, even pretend to believe stories about how "he wanted to change his mind and come back!" even after taking the new job.

I like Buzz I think he has done an adequate job
The program will be worse off if he took another job BUT
Instead of trying to find a new gig after an underwhelming end to this season he should have committed to getting it done next year

Do you need me to explain the difference between a fact and a rumor to you? Buzz is probably holding off on comment and observing how dumb and gullible some of our fans can be. He will probably decide to leave after realizing he can no longer be associated with so many unintelligent people.

Could have kept BK and gotten this. 2 sweet 16's in his last 3 years would meet your criteria…. A very low bar.

It's a realistic bar, we aren't packing Reed. And the second the team struggles people stop showing up. Coaches that make sweet 16s all the time will go to basketball schools or ones that have more support.
