Does anyone know what we pay players and what other schools offer?

i.e. What would Payne make this year if he'd stayed (and Buzz was coach)?

The best point guard in the portal will cost a team like A&M how much!?

I assume teams like Duke have to pay less to get quality players?

Really curious about this so I can judge how well Bucky does in the portal to set up our roster.

Per this article, this past season you needed $3-5M to be competitive, but next season it is jumping to $5-8M with high end being $10M

Thanks for the article. I'm not going to create an account to read it, so I appreciate you providing some numbers.

UCLA reportedly paid $3M to Dent, widely consider one of the best players in the portal.

Can't find it now, but I have read an article suggesting we are giving $7M in NIL.

We're going to need a lot of it - complete A&M rebuild.

True. Everyone keeps saying this, but doesn't nearly every coach in this new era have to start from zero when they take a new job?

It was the ESPN article about hiring Bucky that said we have $7m for NIL in basketball.

It also included revenue sharing as I understand it.

Maybe I am wrong on this but it seems there are a good # of folks that might give small money , say $500 to $10,000 toward the hoops NIL effort but never get asked . 1000 people at an average of $1000 adds a million to the total. . It feels like this is untapped potential and might be a difference maker. Am I off in this ?

I dunno, I think it could be true in some situations. A player might play somewhere where their exposure would be higher and thus more likely to get legit NIL deals so they'll take a little less in direct pay?

Like Flagg has a massive deal with New Balance already, that's not coming out of Duke's pockets.

But this is all still evolving so fast that I don't know if we have much useful data.

This is exactly how BYU got number 1 hs player. They are not paying half of his money reported. He wanted to go there.

The money is all private. All the numbers you see out there are wild guesses.

I guess technically NIL is private money, so no open records request?

The schools that can figure out the most creative ways to pay the athletes are the ones that will win the most.
To compete at the highest level it will take sponsorship deals, as well as partnerships between the community and the school. Fundraising will have to be done among fans and donors to raise money.

If I were the new coach I would state that the biggest selling point to playing college football or basketball at Texas A&M is that if you come to BCS you are guaranteed to leave here a millionaire....and you can also get a college degree if you so desire.
SMU was ahead of its time in the 1980's.

In the age of the portal, is tampering of players on existing rosters as prevalent in basketball as it is in football? If so, I hope we are playing the game with the lure of NIL dollars.

Before someone says, are you suggesting that we do something illegal? If other schools are doing it and the NCAA is not doing anything about it, yes, I hope we play the game.

There is some limitation or denial of NIL to non citizen players. duke appears to have a couple? St. Mary"s runs into this issue I have read. Sorry, no links.

Remember when the argument for paying players was that the schools were making all the money and the players none? Now the schools are still making all the money, and paying the players has been pawned off to the fans, donors, and local community.

So all the fans who wanted to pay players pretty much vouched for increasing their own costs. Genius move.

The money was coming from donors either way altho your'e right , the total amount paid to players has likely gone up significantly due to the legal competition . Impossible to know for sure tho since the under the table $ weren't recorded but it stands to reason.
