This is interesting to say the least. Doubt the NCAA grants him another year of eligibility. If they do, he probably gone to Maryland, but I hope he stays.

There's a bunch of players in the portal that do not currently have eligibility. If that changes it's REALLY going to be chaos.

I thought he was already gone. What reason would he actually get another year granted?

hundreds of seniors who are out of eligibility have enterred the portal just in case they change the rules and grant a 5th year to everyone. None of them actually have a case for an appeal, they're just jumping in so if something changes they are already in there.

I thought everyone had 5 years to play, assuming redshirt or medical redshirt. Are these guys just "professional" students hoping to get NIL?

College football and basketball is just the minor leagues now for both. Especially players that are good, but maybe not good enough for big time professional, will stay as long as they can and for good reason.

There's a lawsuit against the NCAA challenging eligiblity limits. The NCAA won the "first round" today, but it's still possible to be overturned.

Players were encouraged to put their name in the portal in case the NCAA loses or blinks.

There's been some recent challenges to the "five-to-play-four" rule, and some talk of just blanket granting everyone a fifth year of eligibility.

I actually don't really have a fundamental problem with this, as the average time to graduation for regular students is over 5 years now, but it would be absolutely chaotic for it to happen retroactively.

If they're going to do it, I think they should start with an incoming freshman class. Like say starting this year if everyone who is in their initial year of eligibility in 2025-26 has five years of eligibility or something.

There has to be limitations on player eligibility. The "because I want to" ain't gonna cut it.

Why though? People seemed to have really enjoyed THIS past tournament. And outside of Duke and some rotational players peppered through other rosters, for the Sweet 16 and onwards teams it G league parade full of a bunch of guys the same age as Anthony Edwards. Wouldn't it be EVEN better if we had 28 year olds playing? And the guys would LOVE to stay. Because NIL pays more than Europe does. Median top division salaries in Europe is low 6 figures.

Really, we just need to stop perpetuating the facade of "student athletes" and sever the tie between school and sports (this goes for Jr high and HS as well). My nephew plays soccer in the UK. He also goes to university. The two are not intertwined.

If he is any good at soccer it's because it isn't tied to his academics.

But you know they won't do that, and all the kids who were before that class would file suits to get that 5th year so they will probably just grant it to everyone still in school.

I don't want 28 year olds competing with 18-20 year olds. I can see that at my local gym. Unless these guys are actively seeking a degree, then no. They are taking roster spots. Hell, I guess I could play ball at A&M because I didn't use all my eligibility due to injuries.

We don't need a college team full of men in their mid-20's. That's reserved for the NBA, G-League and church leagues.

It's always been about moving forward to tougher competition. Jr High to High School. High School to College. College to Pro. Kinda defeats the purpose when you go from High School to College and the players in College are older than pro players are.

I think eventually where this is headed is going to be some sort of opt-in collective bargaining deal.

To be part of the "NCAA" or whatever it's going to be called, players will have to join a union, by joining, they will have access to athletic scholarships or direct payment from universities, but they will also be agreeing to a set of rules governing maximum contracts, eligibility requirements, transfer rules, etc.

NIL deals would fall outside of this.

But until that happens, the whole deal is going to keep getting killed in the courts.

He graduated HS in the US. Instead of playing soccer for a US college he went overseas. The soccer club isn't part of the university, but everyone on the club goes to university.

6th year - bro already did his five.

For real, let's get Hef a 6th year and let him go to NOVA SE and we'll see him become a D2 All-American.

Let me say this another way. This isn't the UK. In the US they are intertwined, there isn't a way to break that. You break that link then "college sports" doesn't exist anymore, its all some club sports. Actually the vast majority of sports die on the vine if not all of them.

You don't think schools would be on board with letting these giant expensive stadiums sit empty on campus? Hasn't seemed to bother Rice all that much.

Most of the time that stadium is half tarped. Also my guess is they've spend probable about $100 in upgrades.

The largest stadium in premier league is 75K. Most NFL stadiums aren't SEC ready.

There is just too much money at stake for them to break this bond with schools.

I believe it was Kansas State several years back that had an average age of like 23 on their team. They used lots of former military guys.

Need to go to "you have 5 years" and whatever happens happens. Get rid of redshirts. If you stay healthy and can play all 5 years good for you. If you have a big injury so be it life isn't fair
