I just discovered that by manipulating the calendar dates you can actually run multi-season T-Rankings on Torvik's site.

So for example if you navigate to the first rankings 2008, and then change the calendar end date, and you have the patience to wait for all the server queries and calculations you will see that we rank about 50th in efficiency metrics over the past 18+ seasons (I'm assuming its actually working the way it appears to, the data makes sense)

I also realized then that you could do the same thing for a period for each coach.

Under Mark Turgeon our ranking is 31st for those seasons (40 Offense, 33 Defense) and ranked 293 in tempo. Biggest strength was Free Throw Rate (3) and weakness was forcing turnovers on defense (269)

Under Billy Kennedy our ranking is 57th. (91 Offense, 27 Defense) and ranked 294 in tempo. Biggest strength was field goal percentage defense (27) (Especially 3 point % defense at 14). Biggest weakness was Free Throw Rate (222) but we were similarly bad at Turnover Rate (213).

Under Buzz Williams our ranking was 46th. (53 Offense, 44 Defense) and ranked 296 in temp. Our biggest strength (anybody got a guess?) was Offensive Rebounding (2). We were also pretty good at forcing Turnovers (19) Biggest weakness was efective field goal percentage (320, Jesus Christ!?). Hilariously, we were also bad at...Rebounding! (Defensive rebounding 264)

So...is it up for this season?

Its not really a fair comparison because the game mix (and sample size) will not be similar, but if anybody wonders how our current year data looks narrated in the same way:

This year we are currently 44th. (48 Offense, 71 Defense) and ranked 9 in tempo. Biggest strengths are Effective Field Goal Percentage (18) and Turnovers Forced (23). Biggest weaknesses are Effective Field Goal Percentage Defense (187) and Free Throw Rate Allowed (165).

Yeah we see that in real time. Dumb fouls, open layups.

There are 365 teams, so our biggest weakness is pretty much right at the average mark, so far which is interesting, and means our free throw rate allowed is actually above average slightly. Assuming things were to continue now that we play peer quality teams, you could almost call us remarkably "balanced? in terms of all of the components of efficiency, especially when the surface reputation is that Bucky Ball is gonna be unbalanced

It'll be interesting to see how the metrics change in conference play. To me the effective fg % on defense is going to be tough to change positively because it's largely a product of system and the players we have . May get worse because the teams are bigger and more physical. Maybe we can focus on less fouling but it's a slippery slope imo. If you back off on fouling you'll tend to be less physical defensively and on the boards and vice versa . The answer imo to optimize success is try to speed teams up to our pace with maybe a few exceptions (Georgia and Alabama come to mind) .

I'll be absolutely shocked if our defensive numbers do anything other than get progressively worse as we go. If we're gonna win anything it'll be because of our offense.

The best I think we can hope for defensively is that maybe by keeping the tempo up our opponents can't shoot well late in games and maybe turn the ball over some because they're tired but if we're going to tire out teams we absolutely have to stop fouling.

Those Buzz Williams teams were like watching a mad scientist try and reinvent the game.

It's actually pretty remarkable we were as good as we were the last few years with how awful his tenure started.

Maryland is currently ranked 109. Im interested to see if he gets himself fired. I dont think the game fits his employment philosophy anymore, he might have been better off just eating a year 6 rebuild here. We'd have accepted 100 level basketball for one year, just like Maryland will, but they'll get the pitchforks out maybe faster than we would

I think Maryland will definitely get the pitchforks out faster than us.

He has the #3 recruiting class for next season. They were projected mid/bottom of the conference WITH a healthy Payne so it's not really that shocking

I thought Torvik was a 6'10 Serbian guy that got drafted, but never signed an NBA contract that Bucky was bringing in

I think one of the biggest things working against Buzz is the skill level of the Big Ten. Gonna be hard to out-grind all those highly skilled teams. Michigan State has been struggling with it somewhat recently and they're like a peak Buzz all-effort program.

I dont know what "they have the #3 class" even means with Buzz until I see them play

It may work against him. Raises expectations and if the raised expectations aren't met …. can't be good .

Sure but his point is that Buzz doesn't exactly roll young guys out there all that often with much success so how much of an impact will they make right away

2019-2020 SEC wasn't like the SEC last year, but we did go 10-8, tied for 6th, in the SEC in Buzz's first year .

His second year was a mess but pandemic made it an odd season for college basketball

I get that but will Maryland's big donors get it ?

I don't necessarily wish for a Buzz failure at Maryland but I will say I think the probability he lasts thru his contract term is under 50%.

Yeah we ended on a bit of a heater but we still sucked overall. Think we finished 100+ in KenPom.
