Since the fall of the Soviet Union the only A&M men's basketball coach to win in Austin is, unbelievably, Melvin Watkins, but on paper this is an extremely close matchup.

Starting this one today because Texas plays Vandy tonight and I think that game is going to tell us a little bit. Us and Vandy are a little similar offensively so we'll see what Texas does defensively. Probably doesn't help us any that they play them before they play us, but at least it's on Wednesday so they have one less day of rest.

A few quick hitters on Texas:

  • Like LSU and Oklahoma, they've been awful defensively this season, currently ranking #123 on Torvik
  • They don't force many turnovers but they also foul a ton at the same time which is an interesting combination, we foul a lot but we also force a lot of turnovers
  • Tonight's game will be interesting because I thought Texas looked a lot better against Alabama playing at tempo than they have in other games where they seem to get bogged down in the half court at times. Will be interesting to see if they try to play at Vandy's speed or slow it down
  • Texas does one thing better than anyone in the country, and this game is in Austin so you might as well mentally fortify yourself now, but they are #1 in the country in free throw rate
  • Because Texas' coach got fired and wasn't hired someone else, they have an unusual amount of returning players for a first year coach. Our old friend Tramon Mark is still there as is Chendall Weaver
I'm a little afraid we have a let down game after that emotional and physically taxing game last night, but if we regroup this is a winnable road game that would go a long way towards solidifying our resume.

I dunno, but I think the opposite, Bob.

I had no expectations on how they would play at Tennessee and if they play similarly (except make free throws), I'd say we'll be in the game. We started fast and played our game pretty much throughout the first half. It was the 2nd half that they started playing Tennessee basketball, but it took a while and even then we seemed to have an answer anytime it looked like they were going to make a run. In some ways, Tennessee didn't really beat us, we beat ourselves in not making shots when we had the opportunity (Dominguez and Isaacs wide open 3's that didn't fall) and not converting at the free throw line. I'm sure Bucky will highlight those few things because the margin of defeat was razor thin.

Emotionally I think we'll be okay, physically who knows, but I feel better about having 3 days of preparation versus 2.

They did keep up with Alabama but they played horrible against Tennessee. They committed a lot of turnovers that led to 27 points that's encouraging, but I think they struggle with consistency.

I haven't watched them much so I watched them play Bama and it looked like Bama got a lot of open looks from 3 and just missed them.

It was a really strange game, for sure. It also seemed like twice Bama was about to storm back and bury them and then they'd get it within one possession and fall apart again.

Yeah. You need to take the lead eventually.

This upcoming tu game is the kind of game that we need to win to make a serious bid for the tourney imo. Similar to @ OU and @ LSU.

for me, I'm relying on the "it's hard to play three straight A+ games" trope. Maybe they'll have a let down on Sat and we'll be hitting shots.

Yes, they are starting to buy into Miller at a time that is not great for us.

Another year where they don't have a pure point guard. Pope brings it up most of the time but is not athletic or big enough to consistently get into the offense if he's pressured hard. They tend to move better when one of the taller wings push the pace.

Vandy is 12/33 from 2 and 9/22 from 3, not sure why they're even bothering to shoot twos.

from the Vandy box score, tu had 5 guys playing 28 mins, 6 guys playing a max of 23 minutes. 2 others only played 8 mins each.
We should be able to wear them down physically with our press/full court if they are only playing 6 to 8 guys (2 of which are played sparingly). It will be interesting to see if that's true or not.

I'm gonna be honest I'm kind of to the point where this season I think we should use our full court press just a little more sparingly and not worry as much about tiring out the other team.

What's happening right now is we're tiring out ourselves. We have three players playing over 30 minutes a game in conference games and two more playing more than 25 and we can't hit free throws at the ends of games which looks like a fatigue issue to me.

Yep. And that same fatigue affects the 3 ball too.

In future years, once Bucky's got his roster set the way he wants it, i'm hopeful the minutes get divided more, which hopefully lessens that effect.
But for this year, yeah, he might wanna look at saving some legs.

Yeah and I'm not saying to completely throttle back or anything, especially in up and down games where there's a lot of space on the court. I think we're conditioned pretty well to run for a whole game.

It's the physical games that Agee, Dominguez, Griffen, etc are in there getting pushed around by bigger guys that we should maybe think about it.

MarcAg has been all over this, but I'm worried that Agee is going to wear down, especially after our by date in a couple of weeks.

Interesting point. I think Bucky has had to pare down his roster more than he wants to because we need one more better guard and one more better big man. We definitely showed signs of fatigue in the last 5 minutes of regulation at Tennesse.

Great point on the legs and shooting, especially from distance, late in the games. Most of ya'll remember the Loyola team of Paul Westhead when Gathers and Kimble were there. They were early on the extreme press, tempo and shoot strategy and, if I recall correctly, they employed a near hockey style platoon system to keep players fresh. I'm not sure you can recruit top talent promising "half a game" of playing time, but it is an interesting thought.

It also just depends on the game. Ideally there's going to be some games on the schedule where we're hitting shots or they aren't and we can get some semi-comfortable leads at times, and when you do that then it's easier to rotate guys in from further down the bench.

We also might just have to sacrifice some losses in games when our opponent gets decently ahead. You don't just throw the game, but if we get down big early go ahead and get Agee some extra time on the bench and ride or die with the other bigs. If you make a big comeback then maybe you get him back in there or something.

But if we're going to make the tournament, we absolutely have to keep Agee playing at a high level and I don't think he can body up SEC centers for 30 minutes a night for two months.

If we win, the zoo will think we are final four bound.

If we lose, the zoo will claim BAS, say "i guess we move onto baseball" and check out from basketball until the next tu game.
