Nearly a third of the way into conference play and you're Aggies are sitting atop the conference standings, tied with the reigning national champions Florida. We all saw this coming right! The Aggies moved to 4-1 in conference play after beating the orange guys in Austin 74-70. The Aggies took down a team coming off back to back top 15 wins thanks to Griffen's second half heroics, Agee's physicality, and Vinson posterizing their muppet.
The Aggies look to carry the momentum and continue to build their tournament resume against Josh Hubbard and the Mississippi State Bulldogs at home tonight in a late 8pm tip-off. It will be a great test at Reed Arena and the first opportunity to have the 12th Man in full effect as classes began last week while the Aggies were on the road. The Aggies split the two road games losing in double OT against UT, then beating tu at their place. Now we turn our attention to a 2 game home stand where the Ags will be favorites in both.
As most know, but if you're unfamiliar, Mississippi State is spearheaded heavily by elite guard Josh Hubbard. Hubbard is one of the premier shooters in the country and is nearly unstoppable with his quick release. Despite being under 6 feet tall, Hubbard is explosive and quick to always get to an open spot and has a lightning quick release. He's averaging over 25 a game in conference play. He's joined in the backcourt by #10 Jayden Epps who's averaging over 15 ppg. The two combine for over 40% of their shots attempted and nearly 60% of their three's made. It's a very guard centric offense with their only other player averaging over 7 ppg is guard #2 Ja'Borri McGhee at 9.1 ppg. However, they love to attack the paint and score inside as well.
They do have some solid size inside. Their starting center is #15 Quincy Ballard who stands at 7'0, but isn't close to Agee's physicality. They also have 6'9 #99 Achor Achor who played for Bucky in the NCAA Tournament in 2024. They have multiple other bigs and seem to rotate them all as none play more than 21 minutes. We'll need to have Agee stay out of foul trouble and remain his dominant self. Perhaps we found something in Jamie Vinson last game and he can continually improve and show more physicality near the rim.
The Bulldogs have a solid defense with their quick guards, so we'll need to have quick ball movement. We saw Griffen have a great night from downtown on Saturday and I'm hoping to see him carry that momentum forward. He has experience in this league and it's good when he's rolling. We're gonna need to knock our 3's down, but I see Agee having an effective and efficient game on offense down low.
I like our chances if we play fast and can hurry up Miss State and force them into bad passes or hurried up shots. Hubbard has a high motor, but let's wear him down! At home, with an excited fan base will only bring good things. With our style, our crowd will get loud when the three's are falling or an alley oop pass. It'll be a great environment at Reed. Picking up these two wins at home would do wonders. We're slotted into the tournament in most brackets, now we just have to keep winning. Let's play some Bucky Ball and BTHO miss state!!!!
