According to the internet in general, Starkville is as bad or worse than Eastern Europe (before the wall fell).
Also, road trips must include the following, at a minimum, for consideration of attending: private jets, unicorns, casinos, alpine ski jumps, guaranteed consorting with women of questionable morals, animal sacrifice, gift bags, Cuban cigars, and live timber sports exhibitions (especially the super-modified saws). Each of these are found in abundance at all SEC schools, save MSU. The Grove is also a mystical oracle with unknown powers but rumored to cure blindness (all forms, including congenital causes), enhance male virility, improve your car's gas mileage, unclog your sinks, and help you rid yourself of that pesky 10 lbs you gained at Christmas.
The cities are different, and both stadiums are smaller than you're used to. You'll feel right at home at State as an Aggie (LOTS of Aggies at State, as faculty, staff, and grad/vet students). Ole Miss will remind you of tu in some ways; it's hands down a nicer crowd, but there can be some condescending d-bags. Pretty girls in spades in both places.
Both towns have good local eats. Bars are spread around Starkville; don't expect Northgate-esque public drunkenness - most of the interesting parties are fraternity or sorority related. Good bars in Oxford - I've enjoyed a few in my visits there. Cold beer is sold in Starkville, and is not in Oxford. Allowable alcohol content has been approved statewide, but is still subject to local restrictions. It will be at the state allowed maximum in Starkville to my knowledge. I don't know if alcohol sales are allowed on Sunday in Oxford - they are in Starkville.
Accommodations in Oxford are more or less non-existent. There is a new hotel under construction in Starkville, and several newer places to stay.
There are some nice parts of Ole Miss's campus, and the State campus will remind you of A&M's Soviet Bloc inspirations in parts.
Tailgating at the Junction and the Grove are a contrast in style, but entertaining in both cases. I don't personally understand the fixation with the Grove, but to each their own.
I live and work in Starkville and I think it's a fine place to be. Have several friends and acquaintances in Oxford, and it's a fine place to be as well. I think you'll have a good time in either place.
