only exists so the SEC can make damn sure there's no easy road to the playoffs for the Big 12 champ. It's a great check and balance to what is a weak conference.

Teams that make the playoffs won't play in the Champions Bowl

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Assumption has been that it will be in Dallas or New Orleans, and possibly being "combined" with an existing bowl

If its a stand alone, new game, then being in Dallas or New Orleans means that one of Sugar, Cotton & Champions will not be in the playoff rotation.

And the initial report was that champions bowl and rose were already in the rotation

It's essentially a power play move. It says FU to the BCS. It says FU to the Rose Bowl and the Big 1G/Pac 12. It's also likely to make the SEC and Big 12 a ton of cash because they aren't getting a payout but rather just keeping the profits (which will be huge).

What it really does is remind the NCAA, BCS, and the other conferences that the SEC drives the bus right now and they it can essentially do whatever it wants. The funny thing of course is it is entirely possible that the SEC Champ never plays in the game. The move also helps to destabilize the ACC which is where the SEC wants to take it's final 2 members they just want the phone to ring instead of making the call.

You really cannot overstate the brilliance of Mike Slive.

With new 4 team playoff & deal with the Orange Bowl, the ACC is safe.

Bidding starting on location & ESPN deal.

You do realize that the Champions Bowl is for the teams that didnt make the playoff, right? Therefore, it has absolutely nothing to do with making damn sure there's no easy road to the playoff for the Big 12 champ.

I am just surprised the Big 12 signed up for it. Seems they would have rather gone an easier route. Maybe they had no choice and it was just anoth ploy to make their league look strong. SEC will dominate this bowl game even more than they did the Cotton bowl.

The Cotton bowl typically put the Big 12 #2 against either the #3 or #4 SEC team.

The new match up will get the #2 SEC team now the majority of the time.

Big 12 signed up for it for financial reasons as well as the need for recognition. They need credibility after being so close to the abyss the last couple of years.

SEC agreed to equal share with B12. Mistake IMO.

SEC has 14 teams compared to 10, larger media markets and better programs.

Shoulda taken a lion share

$80 million per year.

Can we just cut to the chase and call it the Cotton Bowl?

It will be the "Jerah Bowl."

Or at least a pro-rata share for the number of teams in each conference.

We'll see how safe the ACC really is once the SEC Network is up and running. If the revenue gap between the SEC and ACC grows as much as some are speculating, an ACC team may not be able to turn an invite down. Keep in mind that the SEC already has more tv revenue than the ACC, and it hasn't even renegotiated its deal. Plus the SEC Network should knock it up another notch. We'll also have to see how much the ACC/Orange Bowl will get for their game (and the Champs Bowl hasn't even started their bid process for it's location yet, at least that we know of).

going by history isn't this essentially going to be the runnerup bowl? or the SEC 2nds vs Big12 1st?
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Every 3 years, it will be a semi-final game.

the other 2 years, it will usually be a "runner up" bowl.

but that runner up bowl is better than any other non-playoff bowl.

So what happens to the Sugar Bowl where the SEC Champion used to go? Two At Large teams? SEC #3 when it doesn't have the playoff semifinal?
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Sugar may still end up being the "champions bowl". Either way, for example, if cotton gets it:

2014: cotton gets best not in playoff, sugar gets a playoff game

2015: cotton gets a playoff game, sugar get best not in playoffs from SEC

2016: cotton gets best not in playoffs, sugar gets second best not in playoff from SEC

2017: repeat

Others asked to bid:

No way in hell: Nashville, Phoenix, jacksonville

Long shots: tampa, Houston, San Antonio

They are going to put it centrally located in the SEC states. My guess would be Nashville. LP Field is about 5 miles from downtown Nashville and holds 68K+. Makes sense to me.

Cities that have been asked to bid include: Dallas
New Orleans
Atlanta
Phoenix
Houston
San Antonio
Orlando
Nashville
Tampa
Jacksonville.

I'd guess Nashville is only behind in Phoenix in likelihood of getting it

Unless you like sitting in the cold sleet and/or rain, then you want nothing to do with Nashville in Dec or Jan. I went to the Music City Bowl the year Bama played Minnesota, and it rained and was in the the mid 30s. It wasn't the best bowl experience one can have.

In the end, I think it'll come down to Dallas and New Orleans. New Orleans supposedly has $40 mil saved up, compared to $13 mil that Atlanta has. Something tells me Houston won't be willing to bid that much, but I could be wrong on that. But I would bet heavily that Jerry Jones is willing to bid with New Orleans. I'd prefer it to be either N.O. or Dallas for tradition's sake so that we can keep the name of either the Sugar Bowl or the Cotton Bowl.

When this was first announced as a bowl, the smart money was on NOLA and Jerryworld. Me personally, I'd rather go see a game in NOLA that time of year.

Interesting analysis; I agree Slive is a step ahead of the others. A 16-team league w/ 4 dvisions would help A&M tremendously. By being in a "West" division with Miz, LSU, & Arky -- we avoid playing Bama & Auburn every year.

Imo the Champions bowl becomes the defacto semifinal game under the new playoff structure. SEC champ & Big 12 champ will most likely make the demos 95% of the time.

The 5% exception will be the Big 12 missing the cut!

It's the current cotton bowl.
