During the opening kickoff, the announcer said that Georgia and Tennessee didn't play for 30 years even though both were in the SEC at the time. Why didn't they play each other?

The league scheduling was really uneven for decades, we have only played Tennessee 42 times, and 23 of those were in the last 23 seasons. We have only played ole miss 26 times in 80 years or so.

There were only 10 teams before 1992 and 6 (or 7?) of the games were conference. Before 1992, UT's annual rivals were Alabama, Vandy, UK, Auburn, and Ole Miss. They rotated playing the other teams. Georgia and Florida only became annual staples after the admission of Arky and the Chicken, and the division split into East and West.

That's the unfortunate part of a BIG league...we won't see FL at Kyle for what...another 10 years?...other than the chickens, seeing another team in the other div is a rare event...except for when you see them in the SEC Championship...yes I am being optimistic here! :-)
