- You can not stir your drink with a pom pom
- You can not stir your dates drink with a pom pom
- Pom Poms do not fit in you back pocket and cover your flask bulge
- Pom poms travel in pairs, shakers travel alone. This way you can operate the shaker with one hand while operating your drink with the other.
Here is a picture of a friendly Alabama fan offering a peace sign to the photographer who may be from Auburn. His index finger is at half mast tho because he is using it to retain control of his shaker. You will notice his other hand is free to grasp his beverage container.

If he had a pair of pom poms (pictured below) he could neither be as friendly to folks he may not know, nor could he hold the pom pom and a tasty beverage at the same time. In this stock photo you can not see their hands and who wants pom pom debris in their drink.
Here is a Vol fan sporting multiple shakers as fashion accessories. Without the motion of the shakers on his attire you might be hard to find him in a crowd of prison escapees. The shakers are functional as well as festive.
LSU is not as big on shakers because they keep one hand on the beverage and the other on a tasty food item, which may be a corndog, a crawfish, or some greasy gator.
Gator fans are newer to college football and may not be sophisticated enough to master the art of shakers or mixed drinks. Two fisting Natty Lite is about all they can manage so play along and say "bless your heart" to them a lot.
Kentucky fans tend to let their hardware do their talking....
....but at sporting events keep one hand on the booze and the other hand free to exhibit secret gang signs. Gang members and law enforcement both seem to use these signs to communicate with each other and the general public.
Vanderbilt is still in the "old school" big foam fingers era but they probably own the company where you work so you keep it quiet and let them think they are hip.
Auburn fans use shakers to keep their throwing arm free for a roll of toilet paper. They love shakers so much they make huge ones out of nearby trees so god can create wind to use them.
Mississippi State fans keep one hand on the shaker and one hand on the cowbell! At MSU there is no such thing as too much cowbell. Just try operating a cowbell with a pair of pom poms and it can not work.
