Origin of the MSU nickname "grinders"?

Can anybody explain to me why MSU is referred to as "grinders" on internet forums?

This is not nearly as obvious to me as, say, calling TT "tard".

One of their RB's back in 2009, after a memorable game against UK that put State in bowl contention, made mention that he just kept "grinding for my team, grinding for my State."

Bulldog fans took it and ran with it.

that and Flagship for Arky (although not much of an issue this year) are way overdone. Glad we stomped State to deflate the fanbase.

Why would he wish to be something he's already better than? He'll have the "grinders" to thank for many wins over the course of his career at A&M.
