You should browse other TAMU employees if you think that's crazy low. I know people managing IT departments making $85k here. The University keeps the wage base artificially low because themselves and the school districts are the largest employers here. There's no big business to compete against for talented people. Earley makes probably around what a HS coach makes around here. He was a volunteer assistant before 2023.

My mom was a professor in the Animal Science department for 40 years and made ~75k. The research she did was very specific and didn't bring in massive research grants so she never got the big pay bump some professors got

Yes. People think profs make crazy money. Some do. I know associate dept heads that make $120k, which is not crazy money considering the average house price in CS is now $250k. 20 -30 years ago the University was able to attract people because the cost of living was low. Now, we are somewhere between Houston and Dallas in terms of cost of living and the jobs never caught up.
