Only work in secure communication if they are used by both "ends" of the conversation. So… if coaches used burner phones, did they also purchase burner phones for the adult student athletes involved?

Burner phones aren't any more secure than any other phones. They use the same frequencies, modulation and encryption schemes, conditional access, etc; and they ping the cell towers just the same.

A "burner" is mostly likely as simple as any pre-paid phone you buy at a gas station or mall kiosk. You pay with cash, buy some minutes, but don't have any registration or credit check or credit card purchase linkage back to you as the owner.

But yeah, the idea is you buy one for both sides. And then both sides have phones with unknown provenance.

Then you geolocate them with Schloss and Cain's real cell phones and find out they were always together.

Nothing complicated, most burners are Pawn Shop second hand Androids running off WiFi with no account info. Most high school kids have them.

I think the whole "burner phone" thing isn't what they really meant. They probably used personal phones, not true burners. Regardless, ANY business done on ANY phone is still susceptible to information acts (in this case, State of Texas since both are state schools).

Why would they use burner phones when they saw the players everyday? Wouldn't they just talk to them directly?

I think the assumption is they were calling recruits from their non-A&M cell. High school kids, transfer portal guys, etc.

If that's the case, future recruits or transfer portal guys wouldn't have burner phones. Find one of them and give them good NIL $'s to burn Deushnagle to the ground!

But how do you prove it? It's not like you're going to subpoena the recruit and look at his call history, and I'm assuming the burner phone is history. I saw big statements on Tuesday about pictures of this phone. Without those pictures, I don't see that we have anything.

A students phone wouldn't be subject to pir. A pir would apply to state business done on an employees personal phone though, including a burner. So if a pir was submitted and it is proved a state employee did not submit responsive texts it would have legal ramifications.

I don't think it's info requests he was worried about. When they quit they lose their A&M cell phones, so they probably started recruiting on their personal phones so that they could recruit now without being a random number people didn't know.

they were talking to the burnt orange NIL collective also -- lining up deals

It's not rocket science people. You buy a phone from 7-11 with prepaid minutes, give it to the player in question, and communicate with him from a similar phone with prepaid minutes. Not traceable to any account and beyond the scope of FOIA.

What if we raised money for a 'Anonymous Tip' with reward hotline? $50k for concrete proof that Schloss contacted a recruit or other restricted contact via 'burner phone' or otherwise that leads to suspension or NCAA sanctions.

Pictures on text conversations can be easily faked.

I can easily change my friend's name on my phone to "dabo man" and send them a text saying I have an NIL deal for you.

There....I implicated you.

My assumption was the NIL collective folks were calling the players from burner phones not the coaches.
