Quote:

Speaking during his introductory press conference on June 25, 2022, Jason Kelly spoke on what it meant to accept the role as head coach for the Washington baseball team, a school he spent seven seasons with as a pitching coach early in his career.
"To come back [to Washington] is something that we've always dreamed of, so for it to become a reality is just special for us," Kelly said.

Two years after his dream became a reality, it was abandoned.
Kelly, who was named Washington's head coach following Lindsay Meggs' retirement in 2021, is leaving Washington for Texas A&M, where he's accepted a role as pitching coach, Kelly confirmed to The Daily late Sunday evening.

I think we will see a re-energized coach coming on board.

Are A&M's core values..optional? Who has the POWER to determine that? Are certain departments exempt? Why?

I bet he would have stayed if the PAC held together but that travel schedule is gonna suck in the B1G. Add that to the fact that baseball power is on hostile concentrated in the south, making a move is a career defining moment. He'll have a shot at a real baseball school if things go well here.

Situations change. He wanted to coach in a conference that no longer exists. The dream left him rather than the other way around

How would you like to be those guys? They lost their Football Coach to Alabama, and that was their baseball coach assistant coaching position at Texas A&M. That's rough.

Yep. Lost their football coach after playing in NC game. Now loses their baseball coach to a team that played for NC. Oof.

I feel bad for them, especially given the circumstances of losing a confrence. That alone factors in so many decisions given distance of travel for three game series in sports like baseball and softball.

Losing coaches who are looking for stability and better quality of life is a reality of conference alignment.

Yep, rough.

I know this for a fact.

This was not preplanned. Only a purely defensive play with zero malicious intent.

Can you imagine how much it would suck to lose a coach after playing in a NC game?

Oh wait, I actually can totally empathize with UW.

Sips moving to SEC caused Big 10 and Bug 12 to dismantle the PAC. Actually has more to do with the bad network deal the PAC had at the time but let's just go with blaming the sips.

Sips taking POS sets things into play for us taking their baseball coach. Sips again can be blamed.

At least they have the satisfaction of beating the sips in football the past two years and baseball this year.

This has to be a financial step down. Is there a possibility he felt he wanted to take a step back, get into the premier conference, gain additional skills and then make the move to HC again but in the SEC?

Regardless, if we do well, we should expect him to be in the conversation for any SEC HC positions that open up.

Was UCLA very sad that Chip left?

Is the travel for UW that big of a deal? State College vs SoCal?

Volleyball games would suck bc it's one game but the conference try's to pair locations like Rutgers and Maryland in the road.

Maybe Coach didn't like the lack of investment at UW since they're challenged with partial shares for a while. This move gives him all he needs to succeed.

The financial step-down may be that big based on the cost of living vs Seattle.

I'd this a real question or a joke? It takes about 5 days to get to state college from anywhere (only slightly tongue in cheek). So a 1 hour flight to UCLA or a 3+ hour flight, where you also lose 3 hours in time zones, plus a 4 hour drive... And you parents/fans likely can't go, at least not often.

This is a huge deal to players, and that makes it a huge deal to coaches.

Combine that with a lack of resources and the northwesternmost team in the country and there's plenty of reasons.

I wonder if any of his staff are interested in a pay raise to follow him to Aggieland?

This can help our west coast recruiting.

The PAC was a decent baseball conference, if they did better at keeping kids at home, they would have been very good. That's gone and now replaced by the Big 10.

Now, they have one conference opponent within a 2:45 flight.

Totally agree, especially on State College being 5 hours from anywhere LOL, but did LAX or SeaTac enter the transfer portal? Almost 3 hour flight on a good day.

Agree as well. Especially the travel and resources part. Neither are improving any time soon and the travel one likely not any time soon (requires another realignment).

Distance of the flight isn't the only deal, though travel wise. The BIG has far more hard to reach and arrange for accommodations sites than the PAC12. Think flights, buses, equipment movement, hotels, food, etc. It takes quite the logistical event to travel with a baseball team. Second to football in being a pain.

Plus, as mentioned, the time zone effect can't be over stated. It's a beating going East. West too, just not as bad, unless you have later in the day events.

It's really going to be fun for UW and Oregon trying to recruit kids to play baseball in Ann Arbor in March.

My understanding is that he was being paid $278.000/yr to be the UW HC. That is chicken feed. To make matters worse, Washington is a very expensive place to live. I have no clue what the guy is going to be payed here, but considering the COL, taxes, housing, gas, etc. he will come out ahead moving here.
Peace for Ukraine!

Agreed. The only sport that should be making that trip to the East is football. To pay to get your baseball team to the eastern time zone is not a good thing.
