I'm just curious. Back in hs, we had a guy that could only throw this and when he was on, it was impossible to hit. When he was off, it was home run derby. Catching that **** was literally impossible.

Matt Waldron was the only knuckleballer in the MLB in 2024. Not sure if he is still on a roster.

I don't think being a primary knuckleball pitcher has ever really been common (1 or 2 guys at any time). It seems like a pitch a guy picks up as a last resort.

MLBers are rare since 2000. R.A. Dickey shows 400 appearances but I wonder if all of those were after he developed his knuckle as a pitch…

My favorite pitch, a knuckleballer whose on cannot be touched. So difficult to master most pitchers choose to retire over mastering the pitch. It's the true wildcard pitch.

Incidentally there's a documentary out there on the knuckleball I would recommend, the main trait of all the successful pitchers is to have enough zen to tranquilize an elephant.

I was in the stands the night he made his return to the bigs as a knuckleball pitcher with the rangers. He got shelled, it was HR derby.

Even the very best will have off games when it just won't "float." They get slammed when that happens. My favorite was Charlie Hough while he was with Texas!!

Tim Wakefield was the best (IMO) - watching the ball float and move was something else.

I felt bad for whoever was catching for the Sox when he was on. It was usually Mirabelli/Varitek.

Still remember Wade Boggs hitless inning throwing knuckleballs. I feel for any catcher who has to catch for that.

Watched many a Charlie Hough game in the original Arlington stadium in the old metal bleachers. The good old days of $5 baseball and burnt skin from those bleachers in August.

same. the old days of arlington stadium was true fandom. those bleachers in August in the first 3 innings were brutal but as boys we never complained. we were so excited to see a big league game it could have been 130F and we would have been happy.
We're from North California, and South Alabam
and little towns all around this land...

How am I the only person that starred this? Bravo, Backyard Gator.

ETA: As much as I love The Wire, seeing this post just caused me to purchase Gus Triandos' rookie card on ebay. Thank you.

Myself and a few friends were in those very bleachers the fine August day, the one and only time that Nolan Ryan was ejected...
