Why is this still a thing? Any chance of it going away? Just curious because I can think of more than a few times where it impacted outcomes of our games. I also recall last season Coach Earley getting into a shouting match with UK's coach when they were bleeding the clock to exploit this rule. Just curious what y'all think...

It's not an NCAA rule; it's a conference rule. It's not going away. When you have a visiting team that needs to get away before the normal 6 p.m. curfew, you need to schedule the start far enough in advance of the curfew to ensure that the full game can be played. To some extent, that's on the home team, but the home team doesn't like to schedule Sunday games to start at 11 a.m. rather than say noon just in case the visiting team gets a lead and their coach is an unethical ******bag who will blatantly stall for time to run out.

Ah! I didn't realize it was a conference rule. I always thought it was universal. I guess we better hope we have the lead if games run long on Sundays!

Can you imagine Big 10 play now without it?

Quick breakdown...

Quote:

SEC travel curfew rule
The SEC has a rule in place, known as the getaway day travel curfew, that states that no new inning can begin after 4:30 p.m. local time during the final game of a series on Sunday. The rule is meant to provide a visiting team with ample time to get out of the stadium, get to its flight on time and back to campus for athletes to be ready for class the following day.

My guess is that the late games on those Sundays was when the away team wasn't expected to be in class the next day, or school had already ended for the semester...

I think it's funny that there are actually rules aimed at protecting "student" athletes. It's time for the NCAA/SEC to give up on the charade. Between NIL, the transfer portal, the former NBA player on the Alabama roster, athletes getting 6+ years of eligibility, etc., I'm not sure why the NCAA and/or the conference cares what time games end on Sundays.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Pretty sure that curfew time is not 4:30 across the board; that was the curfew time for the series with Kentucky because of their travel arrangements. It could have been later if they'd had a later flight. Rules require them to schedule the latest possible flight on departure day.

You don't actually believe this is about student athlete welfare, do you? I'm thinking it's about making g it possible to fly commercial rather than having to book a charter. You won't see LSU or Arkansas, for example, pull this kind of stunt.

Ha! Got to (allegedly) make things fair for everyone, don't we?

Appreciate the responses! Was wondering what y'all thought. The rule seems a bit antiquated which is why I brought it up. Also frustrating because as we saw last year, coaches will take advantage of it!
