VERTICAL STRIKE ZONE

I believe by rule the umpire is not supposed to change the vertical strike zone if a batter squats later in the count, as compared to the normal stance he had shown. UCLA used the squat strategy with 2 strikes, but the ump called pitches high that would have been at the belt or below, with what the batter had shown to be their normal stance. Not saying that is why we lost. I do think that is why Moss called out the ump. Good umpires do not fall for that strategy to reduce the zone. The ump did not toss Moss or Earley, when questioning strike/ball call is supposed to be auto eject. Maybe because he knew he was wrong.

The only reason Moss and/or Earley were not ejected was because the ump knew he had kicked several calls. Dude behind the plate was having a tough night and he knew it. Umpires were from the Big 12, so there's a very good chance they were outclassed by an A&M-UCLA (mostly UCLA) matchup. Those umps don't see the kind of talent and coaching (again, mostly UCLA) in the Big 12 that was on display last night.

It is never good when officials in any sport don't know or understand the rules.

You are correct about the rule.

Otherwise you'd see every batter squat with their chest on their knees to form a strike zone that is just a plane with no volume.

How does that at all impact calling balls or strikes?

They know the rules. It's just a hard call. You don't really see it very often because it's kind of bush league.

The hitters learn it in youth baseball diving out of curve balls. Been like that forever.

They mostly grow out of it by pro ball. And the umps are better and don't miss.
