Just read this article. Essentially, he signed a NIL deal with a Rice collective his freshman year then transferred to Tennessee. Collective says he signed his exclusive NIL rights to them and can not use them to represent another university.

I think in future, these contracts should probably be written and reviewed more carefully, with transferring in mind. I don't blame the kid for wanting to get out of Rice, especially since they fired their coach in the middle of his freshman year.

"It's not pay to play"
"Can't be about being at a specific school"
"Can't be tied to performance"

It's always been those things and making is quasi-legal in name only doesn't change that it's still about those things.

There needs to be a listed buyout in every contract. That makes it clear for the player and both schools. It should be in bolt text.

Not sure what our guys are getting as high end SEC players, but on the surface, it seems kind of crazy that this kid left Rice and a quarter million dollars to go to Tennessee. If his goal is MLB, which his draft projection seems, he would get more exposure at Tennessee, but if you can ball, you can ball. If the MLB doesn't work out or he's a bust, I would much rather have a diploma from Rice than Tenner.

However, top tier SEC money might trump all of my questioning
