Aggie baseball related, because his son played for A&M.

Awful. I met him and his wife in Stillwater one year. Tanya and I were waiting for the ballpark to open, and Phil came up to us and introduced himself. He could not have been nicer/more down to earth.

Just a good guy. He helped me and my high school friends move our stalled car off of Kingwood Dr late at night back in the late 80s.

The 'secret sauce' that took the Stros deeper than they'd ever gone.

Saw him many times at the Astrodome. The good 'ol days.

It's a sad day when Scrap Iron has left this world. Condolences to his family.

Sad news

I played against Ty his last game at Kingwood HS....it was a play-in game for the state playoffs and my first game called up to varsity.

Then when he was at A&M I used to do the mid-game drag with Iron Spikes.....and in the 3 years I did it, he was the only player who thanked us - and he did it every single time.

Clearly well raised

Back in 1983-84, I worked for a pool service company in Kingwood. I cleaned his swimming pool. He and his wife were great people and super nice. I was just a high school kid, but remember how cool it was that I had one of the Astros as a client. Godspeed Phil.

I remember his career mostly for the time he spent playing for and coaching the Astros so I checked his wilkepedia page to see what I didn't know. He played college ball for Tennessee and led the NCAA in home runs in 1969 with 12. I'm pretty sure they still used wooden bats then.

A great guy by all accounts. All cancers are awful but pancreatic is especially bad. RIP.

RIP. Life's too short, I heard he was actually kind for a baseball guy. Thanks Phil for our first World Series appearance 21 years ago! They're all complete btc*es, but pancreatic is the worst B of them all.

In 2005 when Yince Young and tu played us at Kyle Field, Phil Garner was announced in attendance. Both Aggies and Longhorns applaued him. It's the only time I can remember that both Aggies and Longhorns applauded together for something.

He bought land in Leon County a number of years ago. He and his wife supported our Two Rivers Wildlife Alliance banquet each year. They were a great addition to our community!!

RIP Scrap Iron.
