Officials like Mattingly are bad for baseball and other sports where sound, critical, unbiased judgment is needed. These types will always be in controversial situations leaving teams, coaches, and fans questioning the rule of fair play. Where is the accountability for this kind of repeated conduct?

Agree completely, Houston! Hopefully BB will ask for some kind of formal review of the call.

To root out bad officials, game changing bad calls must be scrutinized by those charged with maintaining the integrity of the game. That will not be done without the insistence of the aggrieved party. A closer look might well reveal a pattern by an official/umpire. I have no doubt there are more than a few umpires who have no compunction about making deliberately controversial calls, and even relish the attention it brings them. We've all known/observed the type. Mattingly might just fit that profile, but it'll take scrutiny to reveal it.

I agree completely as well. Umpires and referees in training learn early how to know whether they did their job right. The games are completed and they are never even noticed. Mattingly made the wrong call.

i have a feeling thought that the people who are in charge are former umpires/refs and that is a huge problem.

*by the way, i have no idea if this is the case or not..it's just an assumption.

Your assumption is correct.

The NCAA has a staff of administrators whose job is to evaluate umpire performance. At least one such individual was present at Reckling during the SR. He is a former umpire.

Thanks for the support on my claim. I only heard about this guy from the Ag's game but did some research. This guy has a string of controversial calls. The NCAA should investigate and take action.

houston, what string of controversial calls does Mattingly have to his credit and where'd you do this research?

He is from the Pac 10 and and on the various web sites in that conference I did pick up some complaints about his calls. He certainly brings a cloud with him. I also read that in a previous year he called a balk on a pitcher who was intentionally walking a hitter in a high profile game. It was very controversial and some believe it affected the outcome of the game.

What could possibly be the purpose/motivation for that?
Some here would defend it if indeed technically a balk was committed, tho clearly it would be innapropriate for the situation. It's called discretion and judgment.

I remember a little something about the balk call on an intentional walk. It was either in a Super Regional or the CWS, I believe. My memory is cloudy, but it seems like it was in '04, because (I think) I remember hearing about it when we were playing LSU in the Supers.

What are the chances that this Mattingly character made that call as well?

FYI -

Mattingly worked the Fayetteville Regional and ejected an assitant coach from Okie State. Granted, oSu's head coach said the ejection was warranted...

I also remember that in the Super where the balk was called. I also remember that it scored the winning run on that call.

I don't know how to sleep, I only know how to pass out.

Mattingly needs to learn a lesson from his stunt. If a pattern exists, that should be revealed. Undesirable umps do exist, just like fans.

It was the first base umpire Paul Guillie (in our game 2) that made the balk call previously mentioned.

It was the 2005 Super Regional between Arizona State & Cal-State Fullerton. ASU was intentionally walking the batter and Guillie called a balk sending the game winning run to the plate from third base.

So houstonag, you're basing your whine on opinions of anonymous posters on a PAC 10 board that apparently don't know their facts either? Now that's credibility!

Good morning guys and happy fathers day.

Just a closing comment. Umpires or any official who interjects himself into the game so he can be noticed is not good. I believe that Mattingly was looking to make that call. There were enough bad calls during the Rice series that warrant my concern. There has been a pattern of this guy making controversial calls. That is why I state that he is bad for baseball.

we understand OA5. Umpires are not allowed to be criticized for bad calls.

It doesn't matter if we know it is a bad call because you guys are God.

We get it.

No, we get it Tanya. some unknown person on a message board that has never seen a rule book but knows how to use a computer is more qualified to judge an official than those that have done it and are paid to do it.

you are right. that makes more sense. officials are always wrong b/c some "fan" disagrees with a call, thus making the official in the wrong and thus should never call again. thanks for setting us straight.

Have you always struggled with logic?

It can start anywhere, and by anybody. It can only be acted upon by the proper authority. What am I missing here?

Can you get through your head that some of us do know the rules and that sometimes there simply was a bad call on the field?

Yes, people overreact about umps many, many times. But the umpiring crew for the Rice series was jsut bad. It happens. They are human and they can make bad calls.

This is not an insult to you personally. Do you understand that? Sometimes umps make bad calls. They did in the Rice series.

That doesn't change the fact we didn't hit well. They didn't cost us the series. However, they made some bad calls.

Tanya,

Can you get it through your head, just b/c someone one a message board says it is wrong, doesn't make it so. Do you believe everything you read on a message board? I sure hope not.

Believe it or not, but just b/c you don't like a call doesn't mean it is wrong.

Tanya 93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I understand that simply because I don't like it doesn't make it wrong.

I also know that I saw the call and know the rule and that is why I say it was a bad call.

Sometimes bad calls happen. It's the sport.
