I know the state requires something like 180 days of school each school year. Will this be modified because of the school closures due to the virus or will students be required to make up those days taking the school year into June? Asking because we planned our big family vacation to leave the day after school gets out (May 28th for us). Already booked flights etc.

There will be waivers, no one will have to make up any of these days. They also go by minutes instead of days now FYI.

They're not going to have much choice but to waive the requirement

So this must be why I now get a text when my kid is tardy.

We are in the exact same boat...scheduled to leave town on May 29 (assuming it's safe and socially acceptable to travel by then). The Houston-area schools missed 2 weeks due to Harvey and a couple more days that same year due to ice, IIRC. The schools got a waiver and did not have to make up any of the days, and I'm expecting it will be the same for this situation.

I was a student in the Houston area for hurricane Ike, and we did not have to make up the 2 weeks or so we lost. I'm assuming we'll see the same kind of waiver.

This will most assuredly be true but I will say that in the case of previous hurricane days our Superintendent made every effort to make up minutes and to limit or try to eliminate the "gift of public funds" to pay employees. That said, this is a different situation and I assume the Governor can approve the waiver and allow local school boards some leeway regarding the payment of employees.

Are parents expected to use PTO if kids are out of school?

It's no different than any other time your kid has to stay home on a work day (teacher in-service day, kid sick, etc).

Except that it is very different.

I would expect their supposed to use/do whatever is necessary to take care of their kids. As far as how that is determined that is between an employer/employee.

Except that they don't have to pay you for days you don't do work. Like the other person said, work it out with your employer, it's not a single answer despite the way it was asked.

I live in Louisiana. School cancelled for 4 weeks until Easter and then Spring Break is that week. Possible 5 weeks out of school.

I'll have my 4 kids, an exchange student, and my wife's assistant's 3 kids every day at my house for a month+.

I didn't budget that much food!!

That's what I had assumed but wanted to get opinions

All I got out of this is that you voluntarily chose to live in LA.

Yeah, I couldn't think of another way to put it. I don't think we are going to have a ban on domestic travel. However, some companies are already putting return to work restrictions on employees who travel anywhere - even within the US.

I think we are going to go through a period where we will have the ability to travel, but choosing doing so will cause problems at work, school, or even with our friends and family.

I'm a Cajun by birth. This is where I'm from. I chose to be a Texas Aggie.

I think my decisions are pretty good.

Hope your sanity is still in tact at Easter. Ouch. That's a lot of kids.

Put them to work. Don't tell people you have an exchange student, they'll get lynched for bringing the virus to your hood.
