It would be nice if someone more knowledgeable about this stuff than me could track these things and Give us updates on the availability of these items.

I have hand sanitizer and toilet paper right now, but could be out in a month. Will need milk / cereal within a week.

I've never used hand sanitizers and probably never will.

For the most part, washing with soap and hot water will do as well.

If you want a product to clean your hands, there is Hibiclens, a solution that is 4% dihexidrine gluconate (sp). The active ingredient binds to the skin, if washed properly, and will continue killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi for up to 24 hours. No hand sanitizer is even in the same ballpark. Just make sure you read the warnings and instructions carefully before using it.

I don't know if you really need something like Hibiclens, though. I have some, but I use it for a different purpose than washing hands.

I get that handwashing is better than sanitizer but out and about it's a good thing to have in between availability of a sink.

Consider instant milk for use in a pinch. I haven't been to the store lately, so I don't know if that has been cleared off the shelf too.

I am not a fan of drinking it straight, but it works ok in cereal and works good in cooking.

I live in Klein area of Houston. Spouts was completely normal all weekend. Kroger was fully stocked by Saturday night. Once the hoarders realize how silly/selfish they are it should be business as usual.

You have a months supply of toilet paper and hand sanitizer?
You might be part of the problem.

The grocery stores in my Houston neighborhood have plenty of milk and cereal. I didn't look at hand sanitizer as it is less effective than soap and water. Toilet paper was in short supply, though.

Yep, don't get the doomsday thinking. Supply chains are a priority and are all operating really well given the stress from the toilet paper crowd.

The wife and I barely consume a half gallon of milk before it goes bad. I bought a full gallon on Saturday anticipating much more cooking at home. The wife, separately, panicked and bough TWO gallons. I have at least one gallon someone can have. It will spoil otherwise

Alternatively, you can freeze milk and save for later. Fresh is better, but frozen is better than instant.

Just freeze soon and not at the end of the shelf life.

I live in Panama (Central America), and the toilet paper hoarding appears to be an American obsession.

Went to a major grocery store down here on Saturday, about one week into Panama's coronavirus incident (we now have 55 confirmed cases as of yesterday).

The store was crowded and definitely sense of some 'panic' shopping. Items which were noticeably more depleted than normal or out were frozen meats/chicken, eggs, some dried foods like rice and beans, and hand sanitizers and cleaning liquids.

The aisle that was toilet paper and paper towels? Almost nobody in that aisle when I went and the shelves were fully stocked normal like any other Saturday.

Looks like Latinos are a lot more concerned about their food supply than TP.

As they should be. How much TP do you really go through in a month. COVID19 is a respiratory illness, not GI. It doesn't give you the runs.

A family of 4 uses perhaps 2 rolls of toilet paper a week max. 1 month of supply is not excessive.

A 32 oz bottle of hand sanitizer should also last 1 month.

They are not the problem.

A months supply of either is not excessive nor part of the problem. One typical case of TP (that we had bough 2 weeks before all this happened) lasts us at least 2 months. One large bottle of hand sanitizer(again, that we probably bought 6 months ago but use mostly soap/water) will last well more than a month as well.

The people that hoard up for 6+ months of supplies are part of the problem. One month is pretty standard practice for both items.

Arlan's grocery in sleepy Crosby is pretty picked over. No milk, eggs, bread, sugar, tp and paper towels, lunchmeat, or fresh meat or poultry, or detergents and soap. Everything else is sparse, except condiments.

New stock of Purell at Target Memorial City this morning. Limit one bottle per person but not a single person was complaining or acting irrationally. Also had a full stock of Wet Ones hand wipes. Manager said they have a large stock but are not putting full inventory on the shelves. Basically putting out a portion of their supply first thing every morning and restocking around late-afternoon.

For those who can't find hand sanitizer, which probably means there is no isopropyl alcohol available either, head to the liquor store and get some everclear or other 190proof alcohol.

That will work by itself in a pinch, but look for aloe Vera gel in the skincare section of your grocery or drug store to cut the alcohol and help your skin.

Mix 1 part aloe gel with three parts everclear. Put your mixture in your empty hand sanitizer bottle. The alcohol content is still well above the recommended threshold for combating the virus (which is 60% alcohol; this mixture would be over 70%) and the aloe helps soothe your skin from the alcohol.

I'm mixing up batches and going to offer to friends, family, and high risk neighbors.

Stopped by the local Kroger today. They had milk, eggs, bread, and plenty of produce. The frozen pizza aisle was completely wiped out.

They were putting out a new delivery of TP. I was disappointed that there wasn't limits on it. People were getting 4-5 of them, and it was probably gone 15 minutes after I left (I got one...it was all I needed).

The TP hoarding thing is definitely weird. Especially because COVID-19 doesn't really give you diarrhea.

The best explanation I've heard for this is that for most shoppers, being out of food on one shelf or aisle is ok because there will almost always be other kinds of food available, but when that toilet paper is gone, we have no alternatives that we could buy or use to do the job.

Something that I think has been very disturbing about this pandemic is that it's supposedly been very common for people from Dallas or Houston ( to give a vague example) to actually drive out to the stores in rural areas and buy up all of their supplies.

Some idiots out there are literally spooked. They probably think the world is going to end.

The other thing that is majorly disappointing is all of the so called " professional buyers" or those guys who buy stuff at stores for the price listed then sell it online for an outrageous markup. All of those people have been focusing all of their efforts on gobbling up hand sanitizer, clean wipes, and medical masks. These guys are the reason nobody can find any hand sanitizer or toilet paper right now. Blame them.

There was a story about some guy driving all over Tenn in a uhaul and buying all the hand sanitizer. He was upset Amazon wouldn't let him sell for 8x what he paid.

Tenn ended up forcing him to "donate" to a charity.

At least in Arlington Dollar Generals have milk, cheese, dog food, and a fair selecton of cleaning supplies. They were also getting the bread aisle totally refilled this morning. They also had a wide assortment of cerials and electolyte rich drinks like gatoraide. They did not have TP though.

Or sadly corn torillas. I am in enchilada withdrawal here.

How much toilet paper do you use? A month supply in our household of two adults and two teenagers is about 8 rolls, which is not very much TP.

Pizza is THE diet for people with coronavirus or who are being quarantined to see if they have it. You can slide it under the door without going in.

I go through pretty much a roll every other day. I have enough and already did since I buy it usually at the first of every month when I do my grocery shopping.
