I have heard a lot about the hospital overflow problem but nothing about potential solutions.

What is the military's capacity for temporary clinic/hospital setups? If we were at war there would be huge need for mobile clinics, right?

Public schools and universities have tons of physical space right now. A typical classroom is 800-900 square feet and we are talking thousands per city. Aren't these logical isolation spots?

Edit to add: keeping public schools closed probably wouldn't wreck the economy. Shutting down business for 2+ weeks most certainly will.

personally, i think one of the biggest issues the US faces is liability. the various fed, state and local governments are going to have to ensure some immunity to places for them to want to open their doors.

There was an Army doc on another thread that explained it pretty well. Problem with the military in a situation like this is they are set up more for Trauma and combat type wounds and injuries, not sicknesses. And the VA is already included in the national numbers we have been seeing.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

I think the other issue isn't just beds but equipment. You can have all the beds in the world but if you don't have the appropriate equipment (and staff) to evaluate and monitor it won't matter.

I've wondered if some sort of medical professional draft would be in order.

You know bring in the local pediatrician to handle basic sutures. So that ER personnel can focus on Covid Care. Also bring in pulmonary specialists for the same reason.

Insurance companies need to just let people have their pharmaceuticals without a visit to their doctor right now.

NY just said they have 53,000 beds and 3,000 ICU beds. They are expecting the peak in 45 days. The low end projection at the peak is 55,000 beds and 18,000 ICU beds. I would assume ICU require venilators.

Honestly, I like the idea of a medical draft! Only I would also include non medical professionals. Offer some benefits for those that sign up.

Many businesses are interrupted by this virus and some are completely stalled. Perhaps there should be some type of service call to citizens that can quickly train a workforce to expand capacity of temporary care. There have been a lot of layoffs as of yesterday and there are companies that are eating expenses and at risk for going under. If the government could create a system where current employees could temporarily suspend employment with these struggling companies and join the effort along with unemployed professionals this could effectively increase care capacity by a significant number. Especially since some functions will be mundane tasks that are necessary and don't require a lot of expertise to perform.

Who could we talk to about this?

The hospitals are burdened preparing for the apocalypse, not from the actual apocalypse.

The are turning away patients now, waiting for this to immediately turn into Italy.

This is where a medical draft would become useful.

Turn hotels and schools into "non-covid" or similar trauma units.

put doctors and nurses equiped to handle non-covid, or trauma cases there and send people there.

Put doctors and nurses equipped to handle covid cases in certain hospitals. Also be ready for other types of cases that still need a certain type of treatment that cannot be treated in a temporary trauma unit.

Yeah it might suck having to travel a bit more for your specific illness/emergency. But at least it ensures people are treated.

People that aren't working, hire them by the government to deliver supplies to the elderly.

Do sanitization work.

Set them up to patrol the streets to act as "citizens on patrol" to help keep crime at a minimum.

That is shocking. Source?

One huge item that has not been mentioned in all this is still missing. You can move beds into gyms, building, etc., if you have the equipment. You need the staff which has been mentioned but will be difficult as many of them will fall ill as well. However, spread out distribution of the hospital pharmacy is very difficult. How to ensure each site has all the medicines needed on hand and the trained hospital pharmacists to handle them is even more difficult.

Does the military have the trained doctor/nurse capacity overseas? The unfortunate thing is where they probably are is Europe and Far East.

Also what I am talking about is more the fever clinic idea that they used in China. Can't find the interview but a guy was talking about how their emphasis was on finding the virus and quarantining. They would take temps of everyone entering a place of business and if a fever was detected they would send them to fever clinics. Keep an eye on them there and send only serious cases to the hospital.
