Researchers sequenced COVID-19 in recent populations in Singapore. Recent mutations are showing signs of it weakening and becoming less transmittable like SARS and MERS did.

How does a variant of the virus with less replicative fitness out compete the wildtype? It would seem like the deleterious variant would be selected out and the wildtype would persist.

It's also amazing that the consequence of rapid mutation which leads to the ability of virus to become pathogenic in humans is the same thing that causes it fall out.

1) Not everyone knows that.
2) Good news is welcomed, especially now.

Tone down the snark a level or two por favor.

I just like knowing that not only are folks on TexAgs experts at coaching multiple sports, but we're also experts at the spread of infectious disease, emergency response capacities, economic impact of infectious diseases on a population.....and recruiting.

Well, we would have won the natty already if I had been coach.

Part of the issue may be human behavior...e.g. artificial selective pressure. A less pathogenic strain may evade our surveillance criteria so it gets spread around while quarantine and social distancing limit spread of the more pathogenic strain.

1) Re: "most" Yes, this article is suggesting that COVID-19 is not one of those that don't burn out.
2) Since this is biology, burn out could be weeks, could be years. By posting this paper, I've narrowed down the timeline for you.

Glad I can help. You owe me a Corona after this is all over.

texags has shown me that people who can't control their own lives often lash out at others on this forum. A sure sign of lack of character and not being able to process reality.

Good luck.

Exactly. I flagged his post. No need to be condescending really ever but certainly in a situation like this.

I've never really been bothered by "bullying" on TexAgs until this Covid-19 forum....can't say anything without getting blasted by a so-called "expert". It's ridiculous. Many are turning this into a mosh pit when TexAgs meant this for good.

The sad part is that there ARE experts on TexAgs, but having to filter through the other "experts" that try to drown them out is tiresome.

Yep. That's one compelling reason for *short term* distancing, ie lower the curve of hospital level infections to the point that the main strains proliferating are the less severe versions. Also, as a current proponent of short term distancing, I have to acknowledge aggressive strain outbreaks will continue to occur, and people will die, until a vaccine is available.

The acceptance of multiple small, severe, future outbreaks appears the lesser evil vs draconian long term distancing, which has the unintended consequence of severely impoverishing the impoverished. Per the tranche of info I've consumed, I support current distancing measures and it appears 2-3 weeks of such should flatten the curve to the point out medical system can keep pace. I'd love more empirical evidence on threading the needle between the public health pandemic response vs public health poverty impacts, but that info has been tougher to come by.

I think you've finally made sense of all of this for me....trying to thread the needle of a controlled curve with least economic impact.....with the lights turned off
