If you are a small business owner or self-employed then your business is essential to you and your family. The government isn't going to help you. You should be allowed to take the risk if you want to.

Do you provide lawn care for hospitals? Residences for hospital employees?

Just spit-balling ideas for loopholes.

I had to look at what San Francisco/Bay Area was doing the other day due to a scheduling question a client had there. There was a list of 20 different broad classes of services they considered to be "essential." It may be helpful to look at their language in the Shelter-in-Place Order, knowing that Texas, or your city may have other language listed that supersedes or allows your business to continue when that inevitability comes. This was the closest class of services I could find that pertains to your business. Good luck!

Keeping the grass cut probably helps reduce the risk of snake bites. I think it is essential. I would just keep working until you are told not to by someone with authority.

We have an HVAC pleated filter manufacturing and service company. We change the filters at some facilities that are essential businesses as well as hospitals so my plan is to keep running our manufacturing facility and outside services until I get something in writing telling me to stop operating and there's a potential penalty mentioned.

If it's nearly 90 degrees next week like the forecast is calling for then I'm hoping everybody related to the HVAC business will be essential.

Hope that ends up being the case. Thanks for the input all!

In my experience, failure to maintain landscapes can lead to citations from the city or county for causing a public nuisance or sanitation issue due to neglected landscaping allowing a better place for insects and rodents to propagate or for trash to collect.

The flip side to this is how long would the landscaping have to be neglected to reach the standard for enforcement?

This time of year, not much. Weeds growing like crazy and most HOAs are fairly tough. City also doesn't hesitate to cite. Nice, well maintained lawns would take longer

Today, I learned my firm is an essential business. But we're all remote anyways.

If there was a remote way to mow lawns, we'd do it!

If you have to ask if you are essential you probably aren't.

Edit: no offense mention to OP or anyone else, but I think it's true

You can outsource to the property owner. Charge them less if they mow their own.

None taken.

I don't disagree that lawncare isn't essential in the grand scheme of things. I was just meaning in the eyes of cities/counties. To us and the crew we employ, it sure does feel essential. But I know everyone is feeling the same way about their jobs and we aren't unique in that regard.

I thought you were allowed to either visit your place of business or keep working as long as your not one of the businesses told to close. So I'd keep mowing. As a matter of fact I hear a lawn mower now so it's likely there's a crew a few houses over working.

And even if your business is not essential and must close, my understanding is that employees/owners can still go to that place, it's just not open to the public. Our gym is closed but we plan on checking in on it daily to make sure all is alright and to add some things we've been meaning to do like change some of the office locks, clean the floors, etc. Maintenance stuff that we don't have time to do normally. Oh, and a squat or more might happen while this is going on. Perhaps a bench press.

Couldn't damn near everything technically fall under these descriptions? Anyone know of specific jobs that I'm missing in this list?
