practice good hygiene. Also, this is not their first rodeo. I think China got hit by surprise and S. Korea and Japan learned quickly from China. The asian countries lived through the first SARS outbreak, so they are better prepared

Also, discipline and a respect for authority. If the government says stay at home, they stay at home.

Yeah, I think SARS really prepared a lot of Eastern Asian. That, and their culture leads them to accept quarantine better.

If you go to Japan any time you'll see half the people wearing masks. Plus, they did shut down schools for a month early and the PM ordered japanese companies to allow people to telecommute where possible.

I'd place a large wager on lack of testing. There's absolutely no way Japan is sitting at 9 cases/million after being so close to the epicenter.

My complete speculation is that they don't want to show a problem in their country given the olympics.

Maybe they're not reporting in hope of the Summer Olympics not being cancelled??

Nonsense. Viruses don't care what your immigration status is. The normal daily traffic between China and Japan is enormous. There are routes between China and Tokyo that have 10+ airlines competing on them.
