The work I do is not "essential" (to anyone other than me as it is how I get a paycheck)
Typically involves me meeting with homeowners or other contractors on a 1 on 1 basis.
Today I did so maintaining a 6' or so distancing. Will this shelter in place impact what I do?

Good. Stay home and stop spreading this thing! Gonna hurt businesses, but I'd rather take my medicine now and hopefully move on sooner versus death by a thousand cuts.

Actually...this is designed to cause death by a thousand cuts, rather than peeling the band-aid (ie. flatten the curve).

Copperpot

Forcing people to stay home should help to flatten the curve, no?
AgGrad99

Yes.

Flattening the curve = death by a thousand cuts.

So your pulling the band-aid would be to let everyone just get sick right now at one time?

I'm not advocating for the alternative, or arguing against you.

Just pointing out that this IS death by a thousand cuts. Which is what they would rather deal with, than everyone sick at once.

It's needed, because of our medical infrastructure limitations. But it hurts, Badly.

This is not going to hurt business it will eliminate many small business, I predict 25-35%. There are very, very few small business that can survive no income for 30-60 days, even if you lay off everyone you will still have property tax, utilities, insurance and rent to pay. I hope I am wrong but I think this will push us past recession and into a depression that very few alive have seen.

My business will shut down with SIP. We're not small, but we're not large. Totally sucks and I feel for all of the small businesses around us. But at this point, it's inevitable. I hope that 15-30 days of SIP will allow us to catch all of the sick folks, quarantine them, treat them, allow the hospitals more time to prepare and allow our industry to retool to produce the medical items we need.

I hear you. To me SIP is pulling the band-aid versus new rules and regulations every day.

The experts are saying SIP is the only way to beat this thing. If it's inevitable, then let's just do it already and get it over with.

The SIP restrictions in B/CS sound somewhat "relaxed". Several business types can remain open.

Go on with it then, you gonna get arrested?

Guys like you, that's not what the "intent" of this thing is. You sound like a very small business owner, unlike AustinAggie2003 above, who sounds like he has alot of employees.

I assume they'll release a list of "essential" businesses once the SIP order has been made official today.

There are a bunch floating out there, I can only assume they are almost identical. Here is Boerne's

So, im not sure the point of the shelter in place order:

Commercial and residential construction is allowed so that means the entire supply chain is allowed, correct?

Grocery, gas and convenience stores are allowed, so that means their entire supply chains are allowed.

Health, hospital, pharmacies are allowed, so that means their entire supply chains are allowed.

Govt is allowed so their entire supply chain is allowed.

And so on and so forth.

Exactly how many people will be sheltering in place? Why not just close all public parks, greenways, trails, etc.? Wouldnt that be less disruptive but have nearly the same effect?

I think it's more for effect. And to tell people to NOT go to work unless essential.

But this can't be enforced. You can just say you were on your way to grocery store or to get gas ...

The idea is that whatever restriction you announce, people are going to take it one level less seriously.

"Shelter in Place" is a misnomer. It is not a "Shelter in Place" order.

The actual title is "Stay Home - Work Safe".

Shelter in place would mean that if you were at the mall, you should stay there. "Shelter in Place" is used for imminent physical danger typically: active shooters, weather related issues, gas leaks, etc...

Media is lazy and just uses the term "Shelter in Place" because they think they know what it means and it is a term that most people have heard. The problem is they have heard it and they think they know what it means. They are most often wrong.

For anyone interested, here is the Austin order:

Austin Stay Home - Safe Work order

As for what constitutes an "essential business", they refer to the Department of Homeland Security Notice that was published on March 19th.

DHS Guidance on Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce
People of integrity expect to be believed, when they're not, they let time prove them right.

Unless I am missing it, it doesn't seem to count residential construction as essential like most of the other orders do.

This place is growing too fast to slow down construction!

"Individuals experiencing homelessness are exempt from this Order"

I believe the proper term is 'poison pill' for this order to be effective.

Arrested? Haha have you seen how relaxed these protocols are? Unless they move to life sustaining work and patrol everyone on the streets there's no way you could even tell.

I notice sheets of plastic and duct tape are not on the hoarders' list of desired items, unlike after 9/11.

I think SIP orders just help force non-essential businesses (they know who they are) to send their employees home to work from home.

As expected, the loophole of being an essential business keeps all of us here at the office, even though it's not essential to actually be here. Construction continues, yes. Field workers have to be in the field to get the job done? yes. The office workers can get what we need to get done from home, so I'm not in agreement with that decision. Knew this was going to happen.
