The best thing they can do is shut down and wait for it to pass.

They'll keep flying cargo flights whenever they can if there is $$$ to be made.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I'd think they'd at least keep some flights open even if they are just a couple times a week

Great decision. Will keep a lot of sick NYers in NYC.

I can tell first hand there's a lot less air traffic right now. The inbound flight path to Charleston is right over the Ashley River and I'm maybe 250 yards from it so it's obvious when something is coming in when I'm outdoors. Or indoors when an AWACS plane comes whistling by, but either way it's been really quiet out there for a while now. I hear more military traffic than anything else now.

Honestly, I can't believe it hasn't already been shutdown except for those in critical roles.

I'm on the fence about cancelling a Flight i have on frontier in early may.

Theu are offering me a full travel credit plus $50 per family member in extra credit if i cancel by the 25th.

If i wait, i lose the $50 credit, and potentially the full refund (i'd have to pay $79 per person in change fee). At the end of the day, both are just airline credits that i probably wont use - since i think i have to book within 90 days or something.

On the other hand, i am biding my time - hoping for a full cancellation of the flight, so i can get a full cash refund.

Torn with what to do, but leaning towards holding out for the cash refund. (I mean if they werent going to cancel the flight, why would they be baiting me into cancelling for credit?)

It's on Frontier. High probability it would have gotten cancelled regardless of the situation... at least this way you won't be sitting at the terminal when it gets cancelled.

Florida is now requiring a 14 day quarantine for anyone flying in from the tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT)

Good luck maybe airlines keep enough flights going to "honor" existing reservations. I can't imagine Frontier is in a position to be giving cash refunds. I have never closely read the "bill of carriage" I am guessing the rules highly favor the carrier. Maybe your CC company can get you the money back

I was reading about this in the Wall Street Journal. Apparently, due to language in their collective bargaining agreements, the airlines would rather the government order a shut down than for them to try to get together and do this voluntarily. As a consequence, I think you might see a very short shut down order from the FAA (maybe 10 days or something like that), with enough loopholes to let the airlines fly anything that might prove profitable/beneficial.

Excellent point insurance and contractual considerations will be determined by how service is discontinued

I live in the northern panhandle, flat, treeless, wide open fly over country where the sky goes on forever.

On a "normal" day, at any given time you see 4 or 5 con trails in the sky, and at peak times 15 or 20.

Yesterday I worked outside all afternoon and saw 3 the whole afternoon. A few minutes ago I went outside and there were 0.
