Per Dr. Birx today. The majority had 3+ preexisting conditions.

Not being harsh to those who are impacted by this (I have a friend whose two twentysomething boys are positive but will be fine) but I really believe we only need to be sheltering those above 60 or with a weakened immune system. And by sheltering I mean no visitors. Society can pay for the shelter, cost would be less than the trillions of damage to the entirety of society.

You should tell somebody...like a doctor or a mayor or something.

Worldwide.

94chem: I would tell a mayor or a Dr. but it was broadcast from the White House today. I personally think the world should be paying attention to this. In fact, today Cuomo said today "many will be infected but few are endangered."

Dr. Birx at 20 minutes in this video.

That's not what that article said. It said that 99% of people who became infected with the virus and were both over 50 and had 3 or more comorbid conditions at the time of infection died.

Many people who are both younger than that or have less comorbid conditions have died but the thing to take away from that article isif you are over 50 and have three or more co-morbid conditions and you contract Covid 19, you have a 99% chance of dying

Actually doc, I think it said 99% of the people had 1 comorbidity, and 50% had at least 3

You are right I got my information second hand from a colleague who apparently interpreted the data incorrectly. Thanks for your post.

Thanks for edit. I'd edit out an "s" in subject, thought post made it clear. Majority of deaths (and we don't know what %) have 3+ preexisting conditions. Pretty sobering stats.

Good thing Americans aren't super fat with heart/lung/diabetic issues.

Yeah, we'll when you count hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and COPD, then 90% of all Americans over 50 have at least one morbidity, so you're saying basically everyone is at risk including 50 year old former A&M basketball stars.

Majority of deaths had 3+ conditions. Haven't seen the data for the world but in Italy as of last week most of the deaths were over 70. Per Brookings, covid is 8th leading cause of death in Italy in Feb/March (and most of those met criteria in causes 1-7).

No reason those with even one condition couldn't shelter in place, and they probably should.

650,000 Americans (and 18mm worldwide) a year die from heart disease and most fit the pre-existing conditions listed. Let's not pretend those lives endangered prior to covid were all being saved.

The problem has never been about who dies (in Italy average age was 81 last I checked) - it's about hospital and ICU capacity and when those things plus our medical personnel reserve gets overwhelmed it all crashes and that affects EVERYbody who needs emergency medical care.

Imagine going to the ER for a heart attack and dying because there was no space or doctors to take care of you. That is what all of this is about.

NY hospitalizations rose by 24% on Sunday and by 33% yesterday.
