How exactly are they enforcing this? I think I saw Dallas' mention that they're trusting citizens to "police themselves." Is shelter in place essentially just doing what the government already recommended, but now it's mandated by them?

Maybe it shuts down a lot of businesses and limits commerce, which limits your need to go outside. Just groceries, medical and pharmacies will be open is my guess.

Technically it is a punishable criminal offense to violate a legal, written emergency order. The last thing cops want to do is arrest people because of this. Not to mention police departments across the country are facing staffing shortages as officers get quarantined, they are also being told to only respond to emergency calls.

It's amazing how many businesses are exempt. I dont think we are exempt, but if I stop working I loss my job. This situation is ****, thanks China, oh about that debt we owe you, ya it's gone ****ers!

Wife and I ventured out Sunday to resupply. The hair salon next to target was still open. Commented that getting a haircut wouldn't be on my list of things to do. Hard to cut hair from 6 ft away and even a quick 15 min cut is prolonged contact. That gets shut down. Sucks for the hair stylists who won't get paid/tips.

I think it is easier to enforce the order against businesses. Also, if your kids friends call for a get together, might be easier for some parents to say no when there is an order in place rather than a suggestion.

All I know is the liquor stores need to stay open. Some of us need our sanity.

A huge percentage of the population are closet alcoholics. Hospitals don't need to be overwhelmed with people going through the DTs.

Pennsylvania governor is currently reconsidering shutting down liquor stores due to the concern for the number of severe withdrawal cases this will cause.

He's probably already hearing from hospitals.

I mean this to be absolutely no offense to anyone struggling with alcohol or going through DTs, but these patients are incredibly taxing to a nursing staff (frequent calls, pulling out IV lines, high fall risk, hallucinations, etc.). You don't want to be dealing with that on a large scale while running in and out of Covid rooms.

Am I allowed to take my kids out to the family ranch if I live in a shelter in place county but the ranch isn't in one?

Yes. This is nmbasically do what you have been doing for the past week just "officially"

There arent going to be police check points where they interrogate you in where you are going and this isnt martial law.

Just tell them you are headed home.

Just went to TAMU today to bring the fish home. She was hoping to ride it out on campus, but between roommate getting forced home by family and the stay home order preventing even small groups gathering had her rethinking her decision. TAMU was saying the stay home order for Brazos County allowed for students to move home.

Be mindful and avoid activity that exposes you or your family to large numbers of other people. Keep in mind that should you test positive in the future they'll be asking lots of questions regarding you whereabouts to track potential contacts. If you haven't done your part it would look poorly.

I've got a question about SIP:

My friend works shift work about 3 hours away his family. He lives there when he works and drives home for his weeks off. So what happens if his work county goes SIP? His home location?

Could he get stuck not being able to come home? Or worse, not being able to get back to his work location?

Ive been in SIP for nine days (started in desert community of SoCal, then in LA County)

I've been to the supermarket once, Starbucks drive thru twice, taken a few walks at the park down the street and driven 100 miles back to the city last Wed. I may drive back out to the desert tomorrow. Basically living off of Target grocery delivery.

Nobody is being arrested or ticketed for being out. probably because at this point we're all complying

I cherish the time on wide open freeways.

My company has provided a letter for me to keep in my vehicle stating that I'm an employee of an essential business (it listed details) and that I am required to maintain normal work schedules.

My banking and vet friends were also issued one of these.

Wife got one and another to get fuel just in case things get even crazier. Signed by some alphabet soup federal agency, so it works nationwide. Pays to support critical infrastructure I guess.

Most of the shelter in place orders seem to be very broad in what is considered essential.

You can go for a walk, ride a bike, etc as long as you maintain 6ft distance.

And you can drive to locations to walk/ride/etc.

There are no blockades, there are no checkpoints.

You can still move between cities.

There is nowhere in America (I don't think even in NYC) where you cannot move between cities. I've been watching, because my kid is still at TAMU in an apartment. I'm fine with him there with his roommates but need to know he has the option to come home. He does.

So if a golf course is open then driving to it to get some exercise and mental health relief is ok?

I understand NYPD Is enforcing safe distancing among pedestrians on NY Streets (I'll bet 'enforcement' is simply a NY-polite verbal reminder. No ticketing or arrests)

That is crazy. Could you imagine someone trying to keep a 6ft bubble walking the streets Manhattan a month ago?

I heard that Texas is doing the same due to the large number of alcoholics in this state. We are leading the nation in alcohol sales, not even close.

It's why Denver choosing to shut down liquor stores lasted all of two hours before they reversed the decision.
