Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered a "complete" lockdown for India's 1.3 billion people on Tuesday, warning that "many families will be destroyed forever" if the country didn't get to grips with its coronavirus outbreak in the next three weeks.

Modi said the lockdown would start at midnight local time, would last for a minimum of 21 days, and would apply to all of India's 36 states and territories.

Only essential services will be operational. These include water, electricity, health services, fire services, groceries and municipal services.
All shops, commercial establishments, factories, workshops, offices, markets and places of worship will be closed and interstate buses and metros will be suspended. Construction activity will also be on a halt during this period.
Modi said if the outbreak was not dealt with properly it could set the country back decades.

"According to health experts, a minimum of 21 days is most crucial to break the cycle of infection. If we are not able to manage this pandemic in the next 21 days, the country and your family will be setback by 21 years. If we are not able to manage the next 21 days, then many families will be destroyed forever," Modi said.

At least we're not the only ones destroying our economy. I guess.

Cant blame them. One of two ways to do this. An actual complete lock down or just say F it. Way we're doing now, we're wrecking our economy while half of us say "whatever, I do what I want".

Even if people here went back to work, there wouldn't be any computer support so what's the point.

I've been wondering about India for a while now. I watched "Pandemic" on Netflix about a month ago and it shows a doctor in India fighting against swine flu. I remember thinking that Covid-19 will run through that country like a buzz saw. Cramped housing, non-existent (as far as I could see) hygiene in their hospitals, and markets. It's ripe for this type of virus to thrive. Need to keep those folks in our prayers too.

I've been curious about India for a while. They currently have a low numbers of cases, but they've also done no testing. I read they have a total of 17k tests, which only a bit more than we are doing per day, and we consider that to not be enough. I'm surprised they haven't had more deaths. I wonder if they are just misdiagnosing things, or if they are somehow getting lucky in this.

My parents vacationed there from Feb 28 to March 13. That was right after Trump visited for 2 days. There were almost no active cases at the time. They were on a National Geographic train tour. At one stop they were given a health screening, at another they were asked to wear masks.

Serious question, but how does this impact outsourcing companies like Genpact? I have been out of corporate america for over 10 years but back then some of the functions placed over in India were decently critical to the business like A/P and A/R processing, settling shipments, etc.

In theory you can reroute call centers and play the "we are experiencing high call volumes", but some of the other functions will be harder to support locally if no one is at the office there. Not sure how it is now, but accounting firms had also transitioned some functions. Assume that may be easier to bring back home especially considering the firms are absolutely setup to WFH.
