Hi Orlando, thanks for posting. I will say, people here in the Bay Area have taken this very seriously. Not sure if it's a life style thing that lead this population to adapt rapidly to both social distancing and then shelter in place but I can confirm wide spread compliance in my neck of the woods which is likely a representative sample. We don't like to be sick and understand the way back to work and income goes directly through beating this virus.

Everyone except teenagers from what I can see are compliant. Parents are not letting their kids have others over or play in usually crowded courts or parks. They are hiking in our parks and open space with their families in large numbers but truly keeping 6 feet distance from others as they pass. Teenagers are being outed and reported when groups are seen playing basketball at the park. It sounds as if many adults are shutting them down and actually posting photos on Nextdoor where other adults request their friends whose kids have been identified to keep them at home. LOTS of community policy and it's nice to know it's working.

I will keep my fingers crossed this trend continues. If it does, perhaps other parts of the country will understand the importance of compliance and community policing.

Really appreciate the data!

Bay Area resident here. Regardless of the cause, this is indeed good news. Especially since we have a HUGE chinese population and I'd have to think if the virus showed up anywhere first, the Bay Area had to be it.

Honestly though, comparing the Bay Area to New York City isnt the best comparison in my opinion. Mass transit and population density are way different. NYC I think is now suffering from probably having one of the worst breeding grounds for this virus:

  • High population density
  • Large amounts of mass transit
  • Huge international corridor for tourism and commerce
  • Cooler climate with lower humidity where the virus is shown to thrive

The Bay Area has about 8 million people over about 7000 sq miles of the major Bay Area counties.

NYC on the other hand has about the same population, 8.6 million, however those people are only spread over 300 sq miles. Yikes.

Here's to us continuing to flatten the curve and also our friends in NYC hitting their peak.
