Not to make this political but I'm using this event to teach my teenage daughter why Capitalism and small government is the right approach and why the United States is the greatest nation in the history of the world. We've seen other nations managing resources to make sure the young and healthy are taken care of but here we see the IBM sicking WOPR on this thing trying to identify existing meds that need to be explored, we see Hanes contacting the WH and offering to make masks, we see companies that haven't made ventilators in years calling to offer to start again and now we see a company with a seemingly unrelated drug that believes it can help and getting fast tracked permission to explore that. It's the spirit of ingenuity and determination to win that is uniquely American and that's why we'll beat this thing while the rest of the world just hopes to manage it.

We'll see 1-800 class action lawsuit commercials non stop a couple years from now for all of this knee-jerking.

There's a reason the FDA and other bodies take time to approve things.

60 day trial. Could be used if we get a second wave but I think this thing blows over in a month.

Quick google search "Actemra deaths". Shows a bunch of 2017 articles. But my really lazy scan doesn't really show anything more recent.

So either people stopped dying or they stopped giving it??

Fda says for severe hospitalized patients. "critically ill patients suffering from pneumonia following coronavirus infection"

Looks like last resort. Those poor folks

I'd be happy to take the other side of that bet.

It's still used. Not the most common RA drug but it gets used. Most people have failed several other things before getting to Actemra. The usage increased after the self admin shot came out. Used to only be an infusion.

Also very expensive (thousands per dose) It will be a financial burden to give it to an inpatient outside a trial.

We crossed a 1000 deaths about an hour ago. We had 150 last Wednesday. Lets be real. You can't see the peak from here. I'm telling my kids we'll be ok but be strong because we're entering the worst 2 months in US history.

It is a hard but good experience for children. The greatest generation grew up in the aftermath of the Spanish Flu. My 11 year old son is smart and likeable and wise beyond his years, but he is an inflexible SOB. He has eaten 2 PBJs a day for about 7 years using 1 brand of bread. Would rather starve than switch any of the ingredients. We'll run out the bread this weekend. Starve or switch is real now. My wife has been prepping for this (behind my back) since mid January, but we didn't anticipate the stores would be bread-free.

My boy will learn from this. This generation of kids won't grow to be as fat, lazy, and carefree the ones before it. America will be better for that.

80,000 people died from the flu in 2017-2018 flu season.

Did you warn your kids then?

Here's the details of the trial: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/record/NCT04317092

This will be very interesting on for lots of reasons. The dosing is different than RA. RA patients get a monthly dose of 4-8mg/kg usually starting at 4mg/kg. This trial starts at 8mg/kg but also gives a dose 12 hours later.

In theory the long term issues that might occur with chronic treatment won't be an issue since its only 2 doses. But who knows what other issues might arise from a higher dose. Hopefully Roche already knows from prior studies. A lot will depend on the outcome.

Who gets it and when will be very interesting since they allow patients with o2 sat <93% that arent already intubated or patients intubated less than 24hr. Does early or later treatment make a difference?

Not minimizing this, but the Battle of Antietam was less than pleasant.

23,000 died at Antietam. If the US death toll is 10 times that by May 20th, I'd say we've dodged a bullet.

Spanish Flu? Great Depression? The fact that not one, but two sequels were made to 'Back to the Future'?

I can do this all day....

I kid. Agreed that we may be in for a rough go of it. Just show calm and positive leadership with your kid and it will eventually be all good.

200,000 people died in the US just during October 1918 from the Spanish Flu. If we have more than 200,000 Americans die in a month from COVID then I'll come back and admit you were right.

To put this into perspective 0.2% of the US died in ONE MONTH in 1918 just from Spanish Flu.

I really think anti-IL6 is one of the answers here. May not help clear the virus, but it's gonna get you past the cytokine storm that shuts down your organs. I'd want this if I were in an ICU bed.
