I've been thinking about this too. Masks seem to be helping a bit, but our surgeon general says not to wear them.
He says to quit buying them up.
There is nothing to keep you from having one made or making one yourself and wearing that. Which is effective in reducing the when used and sanitized properly especially if you have 100% compliance like in the czech republic.
Do an etsy search and you can find tons of hand made masks that you can buy and leave the medical ones to the doctors.
The purpose of the mask is to keep YOU from aerosolizing the virus into the air. It helps keep sick people from spreading it. The key is that we ALL have to assume we have it and we are doing it for other people and not ourselve.
But by being selfless and wearing masks we can help.
Key factors:
A) Buy a mask with a "tight weave"
B) Buy multiple preferably in white so you can wash them at the end of the day. IMO I would want 10 per person in my house so I can switch it out throughout the day. Don't wear the same one in the same location. Once you've worn it in 1 location it is now considered "contaminated" Take it off, put it in a plastic bag and grab a new one.
C) Use hot water and disinfectant when washing your masks. I would wash them in the garage before bringing them into the house. Possibly with soapy water with a touch of bleach.
