If you bring home food from a restaurant, for it to be safe do you need to heat it to a temp that would kill any kind of germ, or is a few seconds in the microwave good? Brought home bar-b-q with potato salad today. Did I need to nuke it?

I'm guessing someone here will know the answer.

Kenji Lopez Alt posted a video about this topic a few days ago that I found very helpful.

Yes, microwaves will kill the virus

Better make your food molten

But on a serious note, anybody know duration needed for microwaves to inactivate the virus?

If you eat the virus your stomach will kill it.. wash hands before and after you prepare your plate and finish eating

The video in this thread says food heated to 149 F for three minutes will kill it. I don't know if the microwave radiation itself will kill it quicker.

This seems like extreme overkill, has there been anything to suggest it travels through food? If it can live through more than a 30 second nuke we're all screwed.

You can't contract it by ingesting food, but if the food or food containers may have viruses on them, so you want to decontaminate before you touch them.

Oh wow, so how does the virus infect you if your hand is contaminated and you touch your mouth? It sounds like he guy says it's unlikely.

It's all about probabilities. The highest probable vector of transmission being person to person through respiratory droplets and the least probable being eating food heated to 149F for 3 minutes (kills all the virus). There's everything in between.

I really encourage anyone with questions to watch the video as it addresses a lot of FAQs and "what if" scenarios. It's only 15 minutes and it's not like there's much to do anyway Raw foods are addressed @ 4:50 in the video. Transmission through food in general is highly unlikely and there have been no reports of such transmission.

Knowledge is power and these are things you actually have control over during this pandemic.

Here's an article from a week ago. Not sure they've determined the source. Seems like those markets are pretty filthy and doesn't necessarily mean patient 0 got it from eating food. Maybe blood splatter, sickly bat in a cage, etc

Yeah that is just people confusing ultimate cause with mechanism. The apparent reason this arose was due to the Chinese eating exotic animals that people shouldn't be eating. But it didn't transmit through eating it transmitted at the markets where the live animals were kept for sale.

This thread is so full of the bullsh#$ that staff warned against posting. You don't get the virus by ingesting it. If worried about the container, transfer the food with your clean utensils to your own plate. Wash your hands and clean where the container was sitting. There is no limit to the crap floating around here.

I can tell you that based on my PhD research, a 193nm ArF excimer laser won't kill one. But it will make the lab smell like burnt cockroach for days.

It doesn't. It gets in through your nose or eyes.
