Wear masks because they work. Even if you feel rediculous

I fully understand the government's need to stop people from hoarding precious N95 respirators that medical staff need. But the didn't have to lie and say masks are ineffective. I'd say even reducing large particles (as outlined in the link above) will help in flattening the curve. And social acceptance of masks could be the approach that gets society out of lock-down and back and working sooner.

I agree that if someone is within feet of me and they sneeze in my direction, not covering it at all, that perhaps a mask would help somewhat. But now the mask also has the virus on it, so anytime I touch the mask I need to find a way to sanitize my hands immediately after and every time I touch the mask to do anything.

Do people really think this is practical? How often does someone sneeze in your face?

Surgical masks, which is what the article seems to mostly focus on, are readily available.

Good luck finding N95 masks for a while at least.

It's not about protecting yourself, although it does (some). It's about protecting others.

If the other person was wearing a mask that is less of a problem, combined with you having a mask on it becomes even less of a problem.

If everyone wore a mask we would all protect ourselves from each other a lot better.

Your mask protects people from you when you have CV and don't know it yet. Their masks protect you from them if they have CV and don't know it.

The article is about surgical masks just as much as N95 masks. There is no lack of availability for surgical masks right now.

That's my thing. I don't feel ridiculous, I feel like a dewsh wearing one when medical workers don't have enough

Where are surgical masks available? I'd be happy to wear one (as long as I wasn't taking needed PPE away from medical personnel), but haven't found a place to buy masks.

Amazon has a ton last time I checked. May be from 3rd party sellers, not sure. I don't really shop anywhere else tbh. You can even buy some of the various cloth masks that people and companies are making. They're probably not as effective but it's still more effective than no mask.

Then let's do it...don't know what the administration would be waiting for except for lack of availability or healthcare worker needs.

It's not hard to sew your own. Tons of DIY videos out there. I rocked mine at the grocery store yesterday.

You can use a pipe cleaner or a metallic/plastic twisty tie sewn in to the "nose" hem to pinch. And if you make the thing a tube before sewing up the sides, you can fit a piece of nonwoven fabric in between. Elastic around the ears if you're fancy, or just tie it like old school surgeon's mask. And this way its washable.

Is it perfect? No. Better than nothing, and matches the spirit of - don't keep PPE from medical folks.

Just did a quick search of surgical masks on Amazon. Looks like they are available...not sure what is good or not but here is a snapshot.

Two potential problems:

1) You must still be educated on how to properly take off the mask as to not then spread the virus by contact or inoculated yourself or bring it into your home where you now have exposed other surfaces. There will definitely have to be some protocols in place so that it is used most effectively, and not wasted because proper disposal protocols are not followed. This is like what I witnessed at the grocery store this past weekend. A lady was wearing a mask and gloves to protect herself while shopping. However once she got outside, she took off the mask and gloves and shoved them into her giant purse! IF there was contamination on those items, now the whole purse is carrying it to which she certainly will not clean or dispose of. The wearing of mask and gloves did more harm than good there probably.

2) The feeling of safety to go about your business. Yes these items will reduce spread, but they still should be used on top of social distancing and most local government regulations already that prevent people from congregating in large groups of >10. If everyone uses these items, it doesn't mean we can just crank this thing open again. Some people will no doubt think they are now "protected" and not follow social distancing measures. This should be used in combination with other measures, not as the sole measure.

We have to beat the mantra, it's not about the outside of the mask! It's about the inside.

I agree that if you're not careful / aware that the front of your mask is "dirty" you can contaminate. But the truth is, if you got into a "viral cloud" a surgeon's mask ain't doing much anyway.

The mask is about keeping your droplets inside, not other people's out. It works well in one direction, not so much in the other.

Great points. That's the stuff we need to know and especially agree about it as an addition and really for later when things start to slowly open back up again. Maybe that is when/if this will come out as a guidance.

My point is let's do it and drop the stigma, vanity side.

I like the masks. They let me know who to avoid when I am out because they are either 1) sick and wearing the mask appropriately or 2) they are not sick and are just odd.

Same with the people wearing gloves. Watched a couple yesterday wearing gloves at the grocery store; they touched their faces several times adjusting their glasses and scratching their faces.

Stay away from others, wash your hands, don't touch your face.

The posted article makes sense- if "sneezing into your elbow" is helpful, then sneezing into a basic mask and into your elbow should be better.

I would love to wear my full face respirator if/when I go to the grocery store but i am concerned that I might freak people out. What do you guys think? Go for it or try not to induce fear and panic?

Bingo. It all boils down to washing your hands WAY more then after you use the bathroom but every time you touch things and about NOT touching your face. Masks belong on health care professionals now. The data surrounding why masks work, it is my understanding largely factors around making people conscious of not touching their faces. People could where a make your own mask if it provides comfort, training on not touch face.

Got an N100 mask for each of my family from Home Depot in Jan in the paint department before this all blew up. Guessing they are 5% more effective? They were about $12 each. Hoping we can reuse.

they reduce viral load transmission if the herd is wearing them

and the herd does not need to be wearing n95s for such a protection to be meaningful

do your part and wear some form of mask in public places

Similar to your #2, I was at HD and generally stayed distance from everybody. I set my paint can on the counter and then backed away from the counter. Some guy wearing mask and gloves comes up to the counter holding his phone and then rests his hands on top of MY paint can. Thanks buddy.
