2 Things:
-Hasn't C19 been linked to transmittal through the eyes at higher frequency than other virus? Thought I saw that somewhere but someone is free to correct me if I'm wrong.
-If the 3 masks are so powerful and stopping virus spread, (and eye transmittal is insignificant) then we should be putting a lot into producing the masks and get these out for mass consumption and easy pick up. It would keep people safer, and also get our economy back up and running to some degree.

No idea on the percentages. The fact that has been repeated on this board ad nauseam by multiple docs is that, absent large amounts of positive cases in a community, the only thing that recommending masks does is tighten supply chains for health care workers needing PPE on the front line.
At this point, with confirmed positives in communities all over the country, the mask directive is not to protect the wearer, but to prevent droplet spread by catching some of the forties caused by breathing/sneezing/coughing.

I should add that my wife bought some sponge masks with carbon activate....just trying to see how effective they will really be.
From what I understand, the cloth masks, even though they can let the virus through, do keep people from spreading droplets when they cough, sneeze, or even just breathe. So, they serve the purpose of keeping what you exhale from traveling past your face.
Since so many people are asymptomatic, it could be helpful if everyone wore them because they would reduce the amount of droplets/aerosol particles (that could be carrying the virus) that are in the air.
I would not expect them to be effective if you are in close proximity/contact with someone who is infected - which is why medical providers need masks with the smaller pore size.

We are, the problem is we can't produce enough to even met the demand in hospitals, much less begin the have enough for the general public.Quote:

Which is a lot of places. Bc hospital admin is controlling the number of tests in order to keep number of reported positives down, not scare the community, keep a tighter lid on PPE.
This is being repeated all over the country. Incredibly short sighted, but when hospital admin and infection disease nurses are allowed to be in charge > actual doctors, this is the shat we deal with.

From what I've read the masks are not really to protect yourself but to protect others from you. So your mask is to protect me and my mask is protect you.

Began by taking apart a high efficiency filter. Took a while. Used wire cutters. After I took apart the whole thing, the material was greatly expanded to about 8 feet.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
I just figured since the filter is made of polypropylene and an N95 mask is made of polypropylene, that it would be better than just a mask with no filter. This was from a filtrete 2500 air filter with a MERV rating of 14.

Maybe one of the docs can chime in, but from a practical normal person perspective I just do not see the discipline to put on, wear, remove and then take care of all other surfaces and face touching for a mask to be effective to prevent incoming virus. Maybe a less than 5% reduction if any of a mask preventing you getting it,
Masks are just part of the full PPE gear and health professionals are trained on donning and removing.
Widespread masks can only have an outgoing virus reduction at this point. Just my average joe thoughts on masks,

The initial studies that were reposted everywhere back in January didn't have surgical masks anywhere near that high in stopping viruses, especially COVID-19 which is really small. Maybe it was initial panic, but suggestions were actually P100 filters. Consensus around N95 was "probably good enough."
Surgical masks and these home made things are basically "better than nothing." A lot of these infographics going around right now is just feel good, pop-sci crap from Facebook reposts.
Also, don't forget to shave if you have facial hair. Masks' usefulness drop way down if it can't make a seal.

Use of mask is to prevent YOU from potentially spreading via cough, sneezing, speaking, etc. not as much about you breathing it in.
