I've mentioned in the past that I've struggled with severe anxiety and depression for most of my life, a situation that was exacerbated by the life and death of our chronically ill son, Holden. About 12 years ago I finally got help and got things under control. Over the past 18 months, some of these old issues began to raise their ugly heads and not wanting to go back to the dark place I was in years ago, I sought help through counseling and mindfulness based stress reduction.

One resource, Spirit Rock Meditation Center is offering their online courses for a sliding scale donation as long as you sign up by April 15. I signed up for two courses, Mindful Self-Compassion ($30) and a Monday evening online group ($25).

For me personally, I think things have been moving so very rapidly over the past three weeks that just keeping up has kept me preoccupied. However, I think I'm now realizing the enormity of the current situation and I've got to find healthy ways of dealing with it. I hope you are too.

This crisis will likely be the darkest time of most of our lives. It will show us what true anxiety feels like. Let's make a strong effort to take care of and be there for each other.

Are you a Christian by chance? If so and if your church has the resources, perhaps utilize their counseling center. I'm sure some of Texas' largest churches have virtual counseling as well if you need it. My girlfriend is back home in Little Rock taking care of her parents which present a lot of anxiety for her due to how manipulative and demeaning they are to her. Her church is offering virtual counseling sessions. Regardless if you are a Christian or not, praying for you, your loved ones, and all others dealing with fear, anxiety, and depression during this storm of uncertainty.

By chance, no. By predestination, yes. Just kidding, a little John Calvin humor there - I'm actually a mission worker with Presbyterian World Mission in Zambia. We were evacuated back to the states a few weeks ago. I do believe prayer and worship are an important part of one's self care and certainly believe participation in a faith community is important. However, I do believe there are professionals who are more equipped to deal with some of these issues than a pastor - I speak from my own experience. However, I'm not saying one in lieu of the other but both part of one's tool kit.

Amen. I can relate on stress/anxiety.

I find when I focus on others a lot is stress goes away. When I focus on me is when I get in trouble.

That's incredible work! Praise God for people like you who sacrifice so much to help spread the gospel. Your analysis is very fair! Whatever works best is the route to go. Thank you for sharing your resources as well with others.

This thread here is really good and helpful. Thank you a lot for all your thoughts and input here. I am dealing with some mental health problems currently, so it is really very important to me. I have had some bad depressions lately... What do you think about using CBD for it? Maybe you have some experience with it? I would like to hear some thoughts here from you, guys

Thanks for sharing. Please get some professional help if possible. My experience with depression is it can suck you in and it can be very difficult to pull yourself back out. In my case, I've relied on a combination of medicine, therapy and mindfulness meditation.

In the current climate, I think we've all been living a two week existence, telling ourselves things will start to become clear in two weeks. Then two weeks come and go and we still don't know any more than we did. My personality (and part of my mild OCD) means having a plan is a critical part of my being. But like Mike Tyson says, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." After a while that can get really tough.

Again, please seek help and don't wait as long as I did.

I didn't think to mention earlier, but there are some apps that support mindfulness practices. Here are some that I am familiar with -

The first three were recommended by my shrink at Emory.
29K - Seek happiness, find meaning

ActCompanion

Mindful - Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

UCLA Mindful app

One of my demons is a tendency to beat myself up for not being perfect. The Center for Mindful Self Compassion works to help folks give themself a break. Despite its dubious academic affiliation (UT), it's a good and well regarded program. The website has some guided meditation practices.

I hope some of you find these helpful.
