As many people as they have, and as dense as they are in location to each other, I am curious as to why we think they haven't had this absolutely ravage their country. I hope it does not, but just keep expecting those numbers to skyrocket and they don't. Any thoughts?

Hopefully because it's warm and humid.

Assume this is a matter of testing, reporting and... though its been 10+ years since I have been there... I cannot imagine the healthcare system is state of the art so just not seeing the patients come in and being counted. Add in they they sent everyone out to the countryside and maybe they have a ticking time bomb. Or maybe not.

My guess it has more to do with a lack of testing and the majority of its citizens that live in squalor being ignored.

We have a programming team in India. One of them shared with us on Slack that they were coming door-to-door and taking temperatures, and if you had a fever, you had to go with them. I'm not implying anything nefarious - but the point is they were aggressively quarantining the sick.

I think it just arrived in India later... I saw an article 2 days ago about how they had the first 5 positive tests for the virus in 1 day in the million person slum in Mumbai. Unfortunately, I think it's coming. Exponential growth is really slow at first. Hopefully I am wrong.

It's because only 6% of their population is over 65, and no one lives long there with chronic health conditions

Also, they have more built up immunity for disease. If we are their street food we would be out of commission for a week or two.

This is exactly what the Chinese did. They went door-to-door and took you away if you had a temperature, then grouped all of these people together (at gyms or other places) for 14ish days. Separated families, etc. That would never fly here. However, it is an extremely aggressive measure that did seem to have an effect.

I also think India is several weeks behind. They will be a lot like the US in that different regions of the country will have their waves at different times.

There was talk and action of following this course of action. Seattle bought a hotel just to enforce isolation and ease of monitoring. There was discussion of turning major sports arenas into hospitals. The idea was that if you tested positive, you would be transfered to one of these "hospitals" so you could be monitored and quickly moved to suppliental O2 and a respirator as needed.

Luckily social distancing seems to have worked but these plans have been made and I expect to see them used in the fall. We won't do another country/state wide shelter in place but they also won't let people "self quarantine"

India is doing a complete lockdown, and from what I heard from our developers over there, it's been very much enforced.

This has been oft referred to, but my understanding and experience is that these countries do not prophylacticly take anti-malarial. I am sure a medical person or someone from India or another malaria ridden place can confirm.

Per the critics of HCQ, taking anti-malarials for a long period of time is actually what can lead to some of the side effects cited - such as eyesight.

I go to India frequently for business. Was actually supposed to be there right now.

As already mentioned they are in a total very much enforced lock down right now. Police are out in full force literally stopping any car they can and even resorting to hitting offenders with sticks if they don't have a valid reason to be out. That said, I do believe there are a combination of factors at play here as well. They do have stronger immune systems there due to so many other illnesses over the years, they do probably have poor people dying on or that died on the street without anyone knowing why (died of covid 19), and their testing and reporting is not going to be very good. The government there does not feel like the warm weather will stop this thing and thats why there's a total lock down. Last few weeks its been very hot there in much of the country btw.

From what I read about what qualified as taking HCQ long term, they were referring to over a year. Dont think anyone is taking it that long for this.

There have been some who wonder if the BCG vaccine given for tuberculosis in India (as part of their standard universal immunization program) might provide some protection against COVID-19.

They do not take anti-malarials prophylactically. In fact, the laughed at me for taking them when I was there.

So yes, you are correct.

Our team in India has also reported that the lock-down is quite rigid. We have new hires joining us and need to get them operational with a laptop. No one on our team can leave their home to go to the office, they couldn't get into the office anyway (landlords forced to shut buildings), and the shipping companies are shut down as well. Net-net, it is a pretty tight lock-down of movement of people and things. Apartment complexes are sending out teams to buy groceries in mass for the tenants, so this is limiting shopping as well. I believe it is supposed to be lifted around April 15 (last I heard)...will be interesting to see if that holds.

Little late with this...

India's 21-day total lock down was announced at 8:00pm and went into effect at midnight. So 4 hours of notice for 3 weeks of zero tolerance lock down. To boot, it happened at the end of the month and many reported not being paid or being able to make the rent, so stories of evictions were rampant. The result was several million men working cash jobs in the larger cities trekking several hundred miles back to their home villages.
