Kind of COVID related. My aunt is in the non COVID ICU. The staff has been great communicating with my family and even arranging Facetime since no one can visit. I'd like to do something nice to thank the staff for their help. First thought is sending some sort of food. Curious if people think that's doable given the circumstances or any other ideas that would let them know we appreciate all they're doing.

I've seen gift cards from local restaurants suggested. Says thanks and helps out small businesses. I think food itself is problematic given all that is going on.

One challenge there, I have no idea how many people are helping or who they are. I have a couple first names, but guessing many are helping. Also, my aunt can't talk back to us to help us out (and won't for a while).

Appreciate the suggestion and something I'm considering, just wanted to add a little more.

Find out how many beds there are in the unit. 2 nurse per bed, one charge nurse, unit secretary, resp therapist. Maybe a couple of techs for the unit. Plus director and manager. Plus the night shift.

Food is appreciated always: it is the currency of a hospital. Pizza, donuts, cookies are all appreciated greatly and are a good way to make sure there is plenty of food for everyone.

Food keeps us going through long shifts. Someone sent us a few dozen cookies today and it meant a lot.

There was a thing about how to send food to hospitals on the Denver news the other night. Don't know how relevant it is across other states but I'm guessing it's the same.

As others have said - food. My wife's hospital is receiving food from various people and groups and they all appreciate it.

Alcohol for the dads who have become temporary stay at home dads.

Restaurant gift cards are appreciated more I can put into words.

A huge stress relief on our families is not having to put a lot of effort into dinner when we are on shift and they are at home.

And, as you said, it helps businesses that are trying to keep people working.

Food.

2 of the docs at my clinic bought lunch for the entire building from the cafe next door. The cafe sold out of food by 1:30. It was a win-win.

Why doesn't anyone ever send healthy food? How about some boxes of all natural protein bars or some fresh fruit.

Because when people are stressed, most people need comfort food.

Protein bars are not comfort food.

There is a LOT of that dropped off at hospitals, fire stations, police stations, etc...

Protein, cereal, and granola bars or fruit snacks are best, however.

Fruit often goes uneaten unless personnel have the means to thoroughly scrub / wash it. Most of the fruit that gets eaten comes from home.

I have a neighbor that works at a hospital. I smoked two briskets for him to take to work with him on Tuesday.

No, they WANT comfort foot. Which doesn't help them become less stressed,

My wife called a patient's husband yesterday to tell him how his wife's surgery had gone. When they were done, he said: "Oh, one more thing. Thank you for being so dedicated to your job of helping people who are in need."

She said "thank you" and just bawled.

I recommend you try that.

You are incorrect about that.

From the time that you get on shift in a hospital or turn out for a call as a first responder, all that you are thinking about is "proper ppe, wash your hands, don't cross contaminate, update your temperature band, how long has this filter been in my mask, is my mask tight enough, why did that guy lie about his symptoms, wha do I need to decon on the apparatus, etc...." until the shift or call is over.

Sitting down and grabbing a snack of something that you like....whether it is a breakfast bar, popcorn, or Thin Mints...it is definitely a stress reliever because you don't think about any of that. Even if it's just for a few minutes.

So give them what they WANT. Don't make this so difficult.

Ok. I'm doing this.

Already in contact with the central FLAG organization and a couple of Cy-Fair area hospitals. Getting a 503(c) together today. Thanks for the suggestion Freeze.

Once we are up and running and have a bank account, I will let everyone know. If you want to put some of your free time to good use, we have things that need to get done. Just shoot me a PM.

I have an extra box of 9mm I would be glad to share with a health care worker who needs it. I know they haven't been able to get to the gun stores.

Awesome! You might not be on facebook but I think these groups are exploding by connecting to their local community group and mom's groups on facebook.

Most hospitals have a break room available with drinks and snacks. Typically filled with energy drinks, water, soda, cheese, fruit, chips, candy bars, protein bars, ice cream etc.

If you do purchase things, single servings/individually wrapped is preferred.

Thank you for wanting to do this.
